Role
Who you are
- The ideal candidate is someone with extensive experience in Machine Learning, capable of working independently and the leadership skills to set direction as the Machine Learning practice grows within the team
- BS, MS or Ph.D. in computer science, engineering, mathematics, machine learning, (computational) physics or statistics or equivalent experience
- 5+ years experience with one or more of the following areas: search, recommendation, or advertising for a high-scale product
- Experience building and working on end-to-end ML systems, including data analysis, ML modeling and data pipelines
What the job involves
- The Virtual Economy team owns all aspects of Robux, Roblox’s Virtual Currency. Most of Roblox revenue flows through Robux systems
- As a Principal Machine Learning Engineer for the Virtual Economy, you will be the first ML hire in this team and will build new systems related to ranking and similar topics
- You will report to Virtual Economy’s Senior Engineering Manager
- The scope of Virtual Economy’s team includes the several Purchasing surfaces, the Robux foundation systems, a platform to enable Purchasing Transactions and related reporting systems
- Those systems enable developers to monetize their games on Roblox, earning hundreds of millions of dollars per year, while processing billions of transactions
- Build experiences for a global community of over 70 million daily active users
- Develop Machine Learning systems that scale to billions of products and transactions in a reliable, secure manner
- Work with product, data science, and design to help refine strategy and requirements
- Contribute to overall system design, gather feedback, and iterate where necessary
- Be a tech lead for the team and mentor junior engineers
- Help recruit future talent for the team

While online gaming is no longer a revolutionary concept, Roblox has established itself as a leader in the industry by creating a gaming toolbox that encourages quality game creation, which it pays developers for.
In addition to standard games, the platform offers virtual worlds and other experiences to explore and interact with. Its platform provides an online ecosystem for millions to create, socialize, chat, and explore immersive experiences with friends. In fact, in the US its used by two-thirds of children aged 9 to 12.
The experiences on the platform are made by Roblox's over three million creators, and are available on a range of devices from PC to Xbox to Oculus, and more. The company has grown at an impressive rate, and has been keen to adopt new developments in the tech world, for example with its real-time AI translation for players to interact outside their native tongue.
