Role
Who you are
- D. E. Shaw Research is seeking a highly analytical, proactive, and resourceful professional to join our financial operations team
- The ideal candidate will have at least five years of relevant experience in a professional setting and will bring strong familiarity with monthly close procedures and hands-on experience in bookkeeping
- We’re looking for someone with exceptional communication, a high degree of proficiency in Excel, meticulous attention to detail, and a demonstrated ability to handle financial operations with precision and discretion
- D. E. Shaw Research (DESRES) develops and uses advanced computational technologies to understand the behavior of biologically and pharmaceutically significant molecules at an atomic level of detail, and to design precisely targeted, highly selective drugs for the treatment of various diseases
- Among its core technologies is Anton, a proprietary special-purpose supercomputer that DESRES designed and constructed to vastly accelerate the process of molecular dynamics simulation. DESRES uses Anton machines and high-speed commodity hardware, together with machine learning methods and other computational techniques, in both internal and collaborative drug discovery programs
- Past experience with budgeting, projection, and both domestic and international tax considerations for private companies is strongly preferred, as is a degree in accounting, finance, or business. In addition to strong quantitative skills, this position requires superior writing, organizational, and analytical ability

Our take
Founded by American scientist David E Shaw, DE Shaw Research studies pharmaceutically and biologically significant molecules on an atomic level, with the intention of developing drugs that aid the treatment of diseases.
To aid in this, it designed a supercomputer that accelerates the process of molecular dynamics simulation. Unlike earlier special-purpose systems for molecule simulations, it runs its analysis on a specialised application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), rather than dividing the computational power across different systems. This supercomputer has greatly accelerated molecular research for pharmaceuticals, and it's supported by the National Institutes of Health in the USA.
With tremendous national academic and healthcare backing behind it, DE Shaw Research holds an important space within the pharmaceutical research industry, and will no doubt continue to lead the way as its supercomputing technology evolves.
