Who you are
- The ideal candidate knows how to balance high craft and speed, is a passionate advocate for customer-centered design, is not afraid to dig into the metrics, is a skilled mentor who fosters a culture of creativity and experimentation
- 15+ years of experience in product design, with a strong portfolio showcasing cross-platform consumer products
- 7+ years of experience in a leadership role, managing and mentoring design managers
- Proven track record of driving measurable outcomes through design
- Expertise in growth strategies such as engagement, retention, funnel optimization, and onboarding flows
- Strong understanding of design fundamentals, systems design, usability principles, and interaction design
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to advocate for design at all levels of the organization
- Comfortable working in fast-paced, dynamic environments, balancing strategic priorities with hands-on design needs
What the job involves
- As a Senior Director of Product Design you’ll play a critical role in leading design, strategy, and vision across the Consumer Growth organization; fundamentally you’ll help connect people to sellers and items they love
- Your work will span across traditional product led growth initiatives, as well as core consumer surfaces and new 0-1 product experiences
- You'll work cross-functionally with product, engineering, research, and analytics to define overall organization strategy and inspire the team
- This is a full-time position reporting to the VP of Design
- Strategic Leadership: Develop and drive the overall product design vision for the growth organization, aligning it with business goals and user needs
- Team Development: Build, mentor, and inspire a high-performing design team, fostering a culture of creativity, design excellence, and impact
- Design Excellence: Coach managers and team members to continually improve their craft and deliver an exceptional experience
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with product, engineering, analytics, user research teams to lead the organization’s strategy, delivery and health. Collaborate with brand and marketing to enhance the buyer experiences
- Customer Insights: Leverage qualitative and quantitative research to inform design decisions and continuously improve product experiences
- Metrics-Driven: Use design to drive critical business metrics and KPIs

Our take
Created as an alternative to more corporate eCommerce sites, Etsy is a peer-to-peer (P2P) website where users buy and sell handmade crafts, vintage items, art, and photography. The online marketplace works similarly to Amazon and eBay, only with an emphasis on unique items rather than mass-produced merchandise.
Since its IPO in 2015, it has managed to hold its own in an increasingly competitive eCommerce industry, including from Amazon's handmade section that launched in 2015. Further, by providing sellers with ownership over pricing and branding, the site is attractive for those wanting to set up a business on an established platform.
However, the seller-side of Etsy is not without problems. The recent hike in transaction fees and the introduction of mandatory marketing fees for artists with high turnovers has created significant discontent amongst sellers. Etsy must reconcile these issues to ensure artists continue to operate on the same scale within the platform. It plans to attract shoppers with its message of extraordinary, handmade and affordable products.
