To end online harms and provide vulnerable people with positive, supportive messages and services.
Desirable
Events such as the Unite the Right Rally in Charlottesville and the January 6 Insurrection are a grim warning of the dangers of allowing extremist material to spread unchecked. Unfortunately, the internet makes this content easy to access, with extremists able to spread their message to vulnerable people across social media and through web searches. Moonshot CVE exists to counter this trend with data analysis and careful advertising strategies.
Unlike other ways of preventing access to dangerous materials, such as site blocking and blacklisted search terms, Moonshot uses its Redirect Method to purchase ad space alongside extremist content. Not all of the advertising is designed to counter extremism, but it humanises the targets of propaganda and offers an alternative for people who would otherwise go on to be radicalised by extremist materials. This was trialled effectively against ISIS and was rolled out to combat white supremacists and dangerous conspiracy theories.
Moonshot closed a funding round in 2022 that will be used to drive its international expansion and increase the range of its operations. It is focusing on forming partnerships with tech companies like Google and Facebook to protect their users from extremist content, and is working to develop corporate security products to complement its offering.
