Role
Who you are
- We are looking for a passionate and motivated Financial Analyst to join our growing Revenue Finance team at Discord
- 3+ years in investment banking, top-tier consulting, or high-growth tech FP&A with heavy financial-modeling ownership
- Strong mastery of Excel & modelling techniques, experience with SQL, FP&A tools, and Data visualization tools also encouraged
- Experience with consumer-subscription modeling: subscription conversions, cohort-level assumptions, churn curves, and FX forecasting
- Passion for exploring options to automate and optimize workflows to save time and improve accuracy
- The ability to distill complex analysis into crisp recommendations for executives and cross-functional partners
What the job involves
- Reporting to the Finance Manager for Revenue, you will be responsible for driving revenue modeling, revenue forecasting, preparing regular reporting and analysis, understanding the drivers of our rapidly expanding subscription business, and partnering with cross-functional teams to support functional strategic initiatives and unlock new growth opportunities
- In this role, you will work with senior leaders across Data Science, Product, Engineering, Partnerships, and Operations to make a direct impact on revenue strategy and decision-making. Come help us pave the way to a more awesome Discord!
- Forecast the future. Build and maintain long-range revenue forecasts, incorporating cohort behavior, product impacts, FX trends, and experimentation data
- Analyze key drivers. Dive into ARPU, retention, platform mix, and geo/product performance to surface actionable insights
- Automate & optimize. Streamline processes and dashboards in Excel, Pigment, and Looker; replace manual workflows with scalable, documented systems
- Leverage AI where it helps. Apply generative-AI and advanced analytics tools to accelerate scenario modeling, anomaly detection, and reporting
- Partner for growth. Build strong relationships with Product, Partnerships, Engineering, and GTM teams to size opportunities, vet new initiatives, and set targets
- Uplevel Data Pipelines & Processes. Collaborate with Accounting and Data Science to resolve data discrepancies, reconcile figures across different data sources, and build real-time reporting and forecasting capabilities
- Build Robust Processes. Identify ambiguities in data or process, bring structure, and institutionalize best practices that remain robust over time
Our take
Discord is an industry giant in the chat app space. The free platform has rapidly become one of the most popular services in the sector since being founded in 2015. It counts over 150 million active users in 19 million communities, successfully expanding beyond its original focus on video game players to become a broader social networking app and public forum.
Discord's userbase has grown rapidly as remote work has become the norm and a new generation of internet users has come online, attracted to its youthful presentation and plethora of gaming and social tools. It has since fended off takeover bids from Microsoft and interest from other giants such as Amazon and Twitter, and has grown into a profitable company, funded by optional subscription fees and commissions from sales through the platform.
Discord’s remarkable growth, however, is not without obstacles. The company faces competition from deep-pocketed giants like Facebook, and regulatory concerns from those worried about the platform’s relatively light chat moderation. However, the company has the resources and expertise to adapt. For example, the acquisition of harassment detection software company Sentropy will go a long way towards placating the concerns of critics, as will the 2024 acquisition of teen app Gas used to give anonymous compliments to friends. All of these purchases are part of Discord's move to expand out of its mostly gaming-focused customer base.
