Company mission

We’re on a mission. And it’s money without borders. Instant, convenient, transparent and — eventually — free.

Role

Who you are

  • Experience designing, building, and deploying scalable cloud-based solution architectures, preferably on AWS and/or GCP
  • Experience with IaC and automating infrastructure provisioning, developer operations, or continuous integration/deployment
  • Proficient in at least one programming language such as Golang, Java, or Python. Experience in other programming languages are welcome too
  • Proficient in written and verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate concepts to users and stakeholders, as well as facilitate cross-team collaboration

Desirable

  • Experience with troubleshooting common networking technologies within the cloud
  • Experience with one or more observability platforms
  • Experience with containers and container orchestration
  • Familiarity with standard IT security practices (e.g., encryption, certificates, key management)
  • Knowledge of authentication protocols
  • Knowledge of the financial services industry and/or other regulated industries

What the job involves

  • We need a Platform Engineer with a passion for infrastructure and ideally a cloud background to join our mission and help us build a global platform that’s scalable, reliable and secure
  • You’ll dive right into projects on various aspects of our cloud platform
  • The Cloud Foundations team is responsible for building and maintaining the services that help ensure Wise’s cloud infrastructure meets all the necessary requirements for a growing FinTech business
  • To this end you will be working with us to develop tooling and provide hands-on technical expertise to design, deploy, and optimise our services in a compliant and cost-effective way on AWS and other major cloud providers
  • We operate on a strong belief in automation, programmatic implementation, and reusable design
  • We’re looking for people who can step back and think holistically about the ecosystem, but also follow through and help implement the design; drawing on the resources across the rest of the platform tribe
  • As we grow, managing our cloud platform becomes increasingly complex at scale
  • We need to sustain this growth by continuously iterating on the services we run, with a focus on availability, security, and ease of use
  • We’re looking for an engineer with relevant experience who can analyse complex requirements and deliver simple solutions to help our teams achieve our mission with speed and confidence
  • Build, maintain, and support Wise’s cloud platform
  • Design and implement scalable and secure cloud infrastructure solutions
  • Supporting incidents, escalation and troubleshooting activities
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand project requirements and deliver effective outcomes

Our take

Wise started when the two founders realised they would be better off trading Estonian kroons for British pounds (and vice versa) between themselves rather than going through banks. That was back in 2011, and they've since grown Wise into one of Europe's most successful tech businesses, exchanging billions of currency every month.

Wise rapidly grew by solving a significant problem for customers, who lost too much money to banks when exchanging currency. They've attracted investment from some of the best investors in the world, from Andreesen Horowitz to Index Ventures and even Richard Branson.

The challenge for Wise will be maintaining their edge and brand power in a market that's becoming increasingly crowded with new entrants (like Revolut and Monzo) and incumbents (traditional banks) trying to catch up. To do so, the company is ramping up its digital and marketing strategies, as well as pushing for further development of its existing products.
