Who you are
- Love writing code and continue learning to do it better
- 1-2 years of experience leading (as lead or manager) software teams
- Coach direct reports to have a highly productive team and grow their individual careers
- Inspire and motivate direct reports to build quality software and cultivate a winning mentality where your reports are excited by the opportunity

- Experience with Go, Typescript (Node) as web services in addition to general API design
- Familiar with various data storage technologies (e.g. Postgres, redis, elastic search) and know how to interact with them
- Experience in writing complex SQL queries
- Experience with writing secure code and able to spot security vulnerabilities
- Familiar with Docker and how to run locally and deploy remotely via Helm to Kubernetes
- Familiar with AWS and have used some managed services like S3, API Gateway, SQS, etc
- Experience with modern authentication methods (e.g. OAuth 2.0) is a plus
What the job involves
- The platform integrations team is seeking a seasoned Software Engineering Manager to support the rapid expansion of our workload
- Our software continues to reach more customers, with new partnerships and integrations on our roadmap
- To keep momentum, we need to keep integrating with various data sources that show real-time contextual information on the web, mobile, and through our APIs
- The team integrates public safety systems of all sorts, including computer-assisted-dispatch (CAD), 911 live calls, automated vehicle locator (AVL), vehicle hotlists, and other alerts as well as contributing to our developer hub with a growing list of APIs for developers
- The team needs strong leadership as it navigates these challenges
- A successful manager will be able to balance short-term wins against the long-term product roadmap while keeping strong cross-functional relationships with other teams
- An engineering manager has a unique capability to coach technically and professionally, build the team for continued success, and remove organizational roadblocks
- The ability to deep dive and learn multiple microservices, while keeping the team focused, motivated, and growing is paramount

- The First 30 Days...
- Understand current processes and procedures: Driving standups; deepdives with senior engineers on overall product responsibility
- Meetings with your PMs / Meetings with your directs
- Pair with engineers on small tasks for the sprint with support, to better understand the code and understand how the devs work
- Work towards understanding Integration Products and codebase
- Asking questions in a public way to spread knowledge; i.e. public slack channels
- Meet with peers to understand how Flock Engineering works, and how to navigate
- The First 60 Days...
- Ability to perform role with decreased need for guidance
- Take ownership of team with fully taking on 1:1 meetings with directs, sprint ceremonies, and project meetings
- High level understanding of the features we are working on, all OKRs that your teams play a role to complete, roadmap, support, and on call
- Understand the software design philosophies being used by the integrations team
- Be able to navigate through the code bases your teams own
- Engaged during technical conversations to increase quality of input
- Making decisions on technical/product features

- Understand the Flock career path, and where your team members fit into that
- Ability to perform role with little guidance with transparency
- Able to participate and have questions and answers to road mapping and OKR planning activities for your teams

- Able to give good feedback to your team members, and have idea of where they need to grow, and know their strengths

Your recruiter will inform you of which assessment you will be assigned and ensure you are fully prepared for your big day
- The Panel: Learn more about the team, responsibilities, and workflows. You should be prepared to speak about past projects, how you collaborate and communicate with others, and how you live our values. Depending on the team and role you are interviewing for, you may meet with several teammates as well as cross-functional partners
- The Executive Review: A chance to meet an executive in your function and view Flock from a different lens. Be prepared to ask well-thought-out questions about the company, culture, and more
- Culture Review: A final opportunity to meet with the Chief People Officer and the CTO
Our take
Public vehicle surveillance provides valuable insights to emergency services for the prevention of crime, but bringing information together to create leads is difficult. There's no standardised system for inter-city vehicle surveillance, and this makes it difficult for communities and law enforcement services to work together.
Flock Safety provides surveillance equipment that aims to improve the abilities of law enforcement and homeowner associations to communicate data with each other. The company focuses on vehicle surveillance, innovating on existing technology by using machine learning to categorise vehicles by color, license plate, state, and other data points.
Whilst automated surveillance equipment is used daily within federal police forces, Flock Safety builds technology systems that provide a means for smaller law enforcement agencies to quantify and share surveillance data easily. This data can then be automatically processed to help develop leads, a time-consuming process that would usually have to be completed manually.
