Who you are
- You will be most successful in this role if you have a good understanding of the intricacies of different platforms (mobile and desktop), experience working on multi-platform code, a decent understanding of lower-level operating system concepts (virtual memory, multi-threading, process lifecycle, etc.) and networking concepts & protocols (VPNs, firewalls, TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, QUIC, H/3, proxying, etc.)
- You will also have to interact with other languages, such as Flutter, Swift, Java, Kotlin, C#, Rust, C++, C, and Python
What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Cloudflare One Client team. You will be working on the cross-platform app and lower-level implementation of our Cloudflare One Client Desktop and Mobile Apps, which protects devices by securely and privately sending traffic from those devices to Cloudflare’s global network, which can apply advanced web filtering and advanced Cloudflare One policies
- In your role, you will use cross-platform frameworks along with platform-native languages & APIs to implement responsive and user-friendly apps that run on desktop and mobile platforms
- You will also use Rust alongside platform-native languages and APIs to implement high-performance networking code for both our mobile and desktop apps
- You’ll be expected to improve the code quality and to build solid, testable, and well-documented foundations
- As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be expected to lead the design and implementation of major development projects, working closely with our product managers and other teams to implement customer-impacting features
- You will work on stimulating problems born out of the scale of our deployment, and the stringent quality, performance, and security requirements of our product
- Excellent programming skills, with experience writing very high-quality and low-complexity code with thorough documentation
- Strong experience writing easily-testable and thoroughly-tested code (e.g. using dependency injection with the right abstractions)
- Experience with cross-platform programming and good familiarity and understanding of user-interface and core OS concepts of one or more platform (macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android)
- Great experience successfully using different typed programming languages, such as Swift, Java, Kotlin, C#, as well as lower-level languages, such as Rust, C, C++
- Very comfortable writing multithreaded, asynchronous code
- Strong experience with debugging, both at the application level and network-related problems
- An understanding of security concepts, such as VPNs, PKI, etc
- Empathetic, proactive, and constructive communication skills, verbal and written
Our take
Cloudflare is a multi-service global network that provides web security and infrastructure, DDoS mitigation services, and a content delivery network. Founded in 2009, Cloudflare has risen to become an industry giant, with around 25 million global internet properties on its network.
Cloudflare has been responsible for a number of admirable initiatives, offering free web protection to human rights groups, journalists, artists, and US election websites. This goes some way to counteracting the flak Cloudflare has received in some circles for the controversial groups and users who use its services. This chequered history, however, has not affected its over 80% market share in the content delivery network field.
This is perhaps in part because it has proven sharp at staying abreast of the rapidly morphing tech and digital space and customer demands. For example, Cloudflare is shifting to 100% renewable energy usage to create a zero-emissions internet, and in 2020 released a feature that would help users navigate data privacy regulations by selecting where their data is stored.
The cloud infrastructure market reached $53 billion in 2022. While the Big 3 (Amazon, Microsoft, and Google) own 65% of the market, that still leaves billions of dollars left for companies such as Cloudflare. Its ambitious and successful work is likely to continue being a crucial feature of the web, but in 2023, placed it in the crosshairs of hackers looking to exploit its infrastructure. The beginning of 2024 saw Cloudflare vow to bolster its security and patch vulnerabilities.
