Who you are
- Based near an Aurora office, preferably Mountain View, San Francisco, or Pittsburgh
- Ability to travel
- Experience in program management of product development and delivery. Strong preference for experience with projects involving APQP and PPAP
- Ability to break complex projects down to manageable milestones and deliver them in a successful and timely manner
- Strong ability to communicate (verbal and written) succinctly and effectively to various global audiences at all levels, from line engineers to partners to C-level executives
- Master collaborator -- unflappable with impeccable attention to detail and organization, ability to influence, motivate, and generate goodwill with teammates while juggling multiple projects at once and not letting the ball drop
- Experience building project plans and roadmaps with clear dependency management
- Demonstrated direct impact through the design, development, and launch of exceptional products and programs
- Solid technical aptitude and an ability to understand technical designs, challenges and risks; ability to work closely with engineers
What the job involves
- Manage cross-functional programs to integrate the new generations of the Aurora Driver with a number of vehicle platforms at various stages of maturity
- Be responsible for setting milestones with a high level of cross-department dependencies, tracking progress and maintaining accountability against those milestones, and identifying and mitigating risks from early requirements definition phases to integrated vehicle deployment
- Report to the Director of Vehicle Programs and will work closely with Product, Hardware Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering and Operations teams within Aurora
- Manage and be accountable for complex manufacturing and supply projects, spanning functional teams and cross-functional initiatives, including hardware and software engineering, legal, safety and security, business and commercial development, finance, supply chain and operations
- Create cohesive work plans to track and drive program launch deliverables, both internal and external to Aurora, to ensure timely completion, resolve dependencies, evaluate risks and effectively communicate status to upper management project stakeholders. Work across Aurora, OEMs, Contract Manufacturers and Tier 1s to ensure alignment and program execution
- Solicit, aggregate and track fulfillment of requirements associated with introducing Aurora hardware and software to OEM manufacturing facilities, including requirements for with quality, logistics and packaging, end of line test and diagnostics, design for manufacturability, and reliability
- Define, communicate, and track key performance indicators for OEM manufacturing and supply programs at various stages of maturity across multiple functions and departments
- Identify, catalog, and report on risks to OEM manufacturing and supply programs across multiple teams. Manage burndown of these risks through the program lifecycle
- Proactively remove obstacles to drive momentum and progress, identify gaps in communication or schedule, provide support to teams balancing competing priorities and drive results
- Run programmatic meetings with appropriate level of detail for the respective audience - from working level to executive level. Proactively schedule meetings or discussions with cross-functional partners to address roadblocks. Ensure meetings are action-oriented, and result in clear notes covering outcomes/decisions, and next steps have identified DRIs and due dates
- Build and maintain relationships with Aurora’s partners, understand their needs and drive alignment with Aurora’s product vision
- Coordinate and drive workshops with partners; build agenda, track progress and be responsible for outstanding items and next steps
Our take
In spite of emerging from stealth mode in 2018, Aurora is making strong waves in the flurry of startups racing to develop fully autonomous vehicles. Aurora’s hardware and software developments have historically focused on self-driving trucks, which it expects to launch commercially in 2024.
It recently named Ossa Fisher as its new President, who will focus on scaling operations ahead of this commercial launch. Passenger cars and associated services are expected to roll out following this launch. However, the self-driving industry is riddled with unmet deadlines, cash shortfalls, and tough technological challenges.
To remain competitive with deep-pocket industry giants like Tesla and Google’s Waymo, the company continues to land substantial backing from the likes of Sequoia Capital, accelerating its post-IPO growth. The pedigree of its founders may well continue to win over investor confidence. It boasts leading prior positions in the self-driving divisions of Tesla, Uber, and Google.
