Who you are
- Solid foundations in JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML and CSS
- Solid understanding of web technologies
- Experience with a Front End UI Framework (e.g. Vue, React, Svelte)
- Ability to design and architect large scale web applications
- Ability to communicate clearly and collaborate consistently
- 10+ YOE and Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in an engineering, mathematics, or related field

What the job involves
- Zoox is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to build the tools that power our autonomous ride sharing service
- Our Operational Tools Team is a crucial part of Zoox’s mission to deliver autonomous ride-hailing to the world
- We're building a team of highly collaborative and talented people with a diverse set of expertise
- Our Operational Tools are essential for the safe and effective use of our ever-growing fleet of autonomous robotaxis
- As an engineer on the team, you will collaborate with product managers, designers, QA engineers and remote operators to build full stack web applications to monitor and support our fleet at scale, provide in-vehicle visualization systems and provide live ride support to our growing rider base
- Design and implement highly scalable and reliable web applications to support Zoox's autonomous robotaxi service
- Provide architectural leadership across frontend, backend, infrastructure, and AI investments — ensuring reliability, scalability, and technical excellence
- Collaborate with software engineering teams, PMs, designers and remote operators to build new features
- Mentor and guide junior engineers, performing code reviews and promoting best practices
Our take
Zoox, a self-driving vehicle company, was founded to make personal transportation safer and more enjoyable for all. It has aimed to achieve this goal by creating a new mode of driverless transportation, thus eradicating the safety and logistical issues that come with human drivers.
It revealed its custom vehicle design in December 2020, showcasing something different from just a car without a driver. Uniquely, all four wheels are independent of one another, and the vehicles have no front or back, making them more agile than a standard car. Zoox claims that it is different from other industry players because it has created an entire driverless ecosystem, including the vehicle itself, allowing it to have more control.
The company is fast becoming a major player in an industry that is predicted to be worth $2 trillion by 2030. Electric motors are highly desirable, particularly in an urban environment, as governments look for ways to reduce emissions and improve air quality. Zoox is aiming to play a vital role in this evolution towards more sustainable urban mobility. Amazon acquired the company in 2020 and, despite a general downturn in the sector through 2022, is building a Zoox factory and budgeting $1 billion per year for future development and production.
