Our take
TikTok is a video-sharing social networking service to create and share a huge variety of entertaining videos. The platform allows users to share videos between 15 seconds to 3 minutes, allowing users to connect and collaborate with users worldwide.
Much of TikTok's success comes down to the fact that it has created a new type of social media not dependent on who users follow, unlike Twitter and Facebook. The app is free to download, and generates its money from advertising interspersed between video content. TikTok works on a highly personalized and intelligent algorithm, matching users with ever more relevant content using its sophisticated backend matching power. This means users never run out of relevant material, and why users find the app so addictive, often spending twice the time on the app compared to Facebooks offerings.
TikTok's biggest markets are in the United States, Europe, Brazil and Southeast Asia, while its parent company ByteDance is headquartered in China. TikTok's worldwide growth in popularity has been exponential with circa 2B users and 30M daily active users, a number that continues to rise rapidly as its platform develops further.
