Role
Who you are
- 5+ years of experience in total rewards/compensation, with a track record of developing and implementing successful programs
- Familiarity with public company compensation practices, executive compensation, and proxy disclosures (preferred)
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and deadlines, and solve challenging problems in a fast-paced, environment while also working collaboratively in a team environment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and strong interpersonal skills
- Proficient in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Strong strategic and analytical skills, with the ability to develop and implement total rewards strategies that support the organization's business goals with attention to detail and accuracy
- Previous experience with working as or with headquarter HR
- Familiarity with compensation survey providers (e.g., Radford, Mercer, Aon)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and collaborate effectively with stakeholders
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize effectively
- Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards related to total rewards
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion
What the job involves
- We are seeking a compensation specialist that is dedicated and passionate about everything total rewards with a track record that supports their ability to manage a wide range of programs, systems, and policies that are essential to the daily affairs and well-being of our employees
- The compensation specialist will work hand-in-hand with leadership and internal/external stakeholders to provide the best-in-class rewards programs that best suit the needs of our employees and align with company values, objectives, and priorities
- Work closely with headquarter HR to develop and implement compensation programs, including base pay, incentives, and equity awards, to attract, retain, and empower employees
- Create recognition programs that recognize and reward employees for their contributions and performance
- Support the annual compensation review process, including merit increases, and bonus payouts
- Maintain and update salary ranges and compensation structures
- Participate in and analyze compensation surveys to gather market data and identify competitive pay practices
- Conduct ad-hoc market pricing for new and existing roles to ensure external competitiveness
- Research compensation trends and best practices within the industry and for public companies
- Manage and maintain compensation data in HRIS (e.g., ADP, NAVER Connect, etc.) and other compensation systems, ensuring accuracy and integrity
- Develop and generate various compensation reports and analyses to support business decisions
- Assist in the preparation of internal and external audit requests related to compensation
- Ensure all compensation programs and practices comply with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., FLSA, SOX)
- Assist in the documentation of compensation processes and policies
- Participate in special projects related to compensation, such as new program design, system implementations, or M&A activities
- Stay informed of emerging trends and best practices in total rewards and regularly evaluate and recommend changes to the organization's programs to ensure they remain competitive
- Collaborate with People Partners, admin and other key stakeholders to ensure the effective communication and implementation of total rewards programs
- Collaborate across the HR team to assess, create and implement innovative solutions for a variety of core associate services to foster an environment of open communications. Lead process improvements across People Services, ensuring all associates are aware of how their work fits within the overall plans
Our take
Content is king and Wattpad has managed to create a platform that aggregates the most loved original writing content in the world, turning the traditional publishing industry on its head.
Where authors used to submit drafts to dozens of publishing houses in the hope of getting some eyeballs on their work, Wattpad opened up the process to millions of young authors by letting them easily submit their work, and fostering a community around their software that offers feedback and help.
The e-reading platform is now looking to double down on its strategy of taking its user-generated fiction and turning it into successful intellectual property upon which original series and movies can be based. However a significant challenge for Wattpad is in producing original, marketable content from its platform given the popularity of fanfiction, stories which are based on existing intellectual property.
Another challenge for Wattpad is the current economic conditions which have affected much of the tech sector and are not sparing digital publishing. Having shelved bold plans for the future it also laid off 15% of its workforce in March 2023. Having realigned for its current business needs however, it is now well placed to weather the current market downturn.

He is also the co-founder of Two Small Fish Ventures, a fund that invests in Toronto and Waterloo-based early-stage internet companies with strong network effects.
Ivan Yuen
(CSO)Prior to Wattpad, Ivan co-founded FeedM8 and served as the company’s CTO. Before that he was one of the first employees of Tira Wireless, where he helped grow the technical team and developed new and emerging wireless technologies. Ivan graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Computer Engineering and also earned an MBA from the Rotman School of Management.
