Education: Must be currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program, or have graduated from such a program within the past year
Must be able to work a full-time, 40-hour-per-week schedule with 5 days onsite in Needham, MA
Must have strong experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Creo, or Rhino)
Must have strong experience using basic prototyping tools (3D printing, shop competency)
Strong communicator who can convey ideas, concepts, and solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences
Strong intuition for mechanical engineering and physics principles, with an emphasis on applying this in product design, ergonomics, and human-centered engineering
Analytical and detail-oriented, with a creative approach to identifying and addressing potential issues
Demonstrates intellectual curiosity, a hands-on attitude, and commitment to developing elegant, innovative solutions that balance technical and user-focused design principles
Skilled at juggling multiple projects, with flexibility to pivot as needed while keeping sight of broader design objectives
Enthusiastic about user-centered product design, form, and function
Hands-on experience building physical prototypes in various materials (e.g., plastic, metal) and familiarity with machine shop equipment
Basic understanding of electronics and components commonly used in small appliances (motors, sensors, PCBAs) is desirable
Experience with rapid prototyping tools like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or other developer kits is a plus

What the job involves

As a Product Design Engineering Co-op on the Shark team, you’ll help define the future of home innovation across categories like floorcare, haircare, air purification, and beyond
Sitting at the intersection of Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering, this role is designed for problem solvers who love transforming ambiguous challenges into thoughtful, human-centered product experiences
You’ll work alongside designers, engineers, and marketers to explore early-stage concepts, prototype compelling ideas, and build out the future of the Shark portfolio
Generate new product concepts with a user-centered approach, focusing on ergonomics, aesthetics, and functional innovation
Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to define solutions that meet functional requirements while enhancing the user experience
Lead and participate in design studies to solve technical and user-experience challenges
Build and test quick turnaround, low fidelity prototypes, and be able to build key findings on user testing with them
Approach everyday design challenges with curiosity and resilience, driven to rethink and innovate

Consumer demand for new and better home appliances continues to grow. SharkNinja serves this demand by designing and manufacturing innovative home goods and devices. Specifically, it has a growing line of solutions that consist of Shark cleaning and home care products and Ninja kitchen appliances.

SharkNinja has been in operation since 1994, which is testament to the quality and popularity of its products. Since its initial launch in Canada, the company has expanded into the US and the UK. In 2017 SharkNinja was bought by CDH Private Equity for over $1.5 Billion, further proof of its impressive market value. Perhaps more evidence is that it brings in annual revenues of around $4B.

SharkNinja’s main challenge is facing down big-name competitors such as home appliance giant Dyson. In fact, through innovative design, it seized the market-leading spot in traditional vacuums from Dyson and is only second to iRobot in sales of robotic models. A 2023 IPO saw an extra $296 million in funding added to SharkNinja's pot and was followed by product launches in new sectors such as air conditioning and food cooling, indicating that the company is still full of new product ideas.
