- 10+ years of programming experience in languages such as Java or Go
- Experience with gRPC, Thrift, and other server-to-server communication protocols
- Experience with Kafka and event-driven systems
- 5+ years using AWS / cloud technologies
- High proficiency designing and implementing microservices
- Understanding and adherence to industry-standard best practices in software development and architecture
- Experience with Scrum/Agile development methodologies
- Strong critical thinking skills, great communication skills and passion for delivering an operational excellence
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
- Experience with SEO is a huge plus

- As a Staff Software Engineer in the Business Growth organization, you will use your experience with microservices based architecture to build products that deliver high business impact for our customers
- You will lead design and develop services to support an industry leading consumer experience while also supporting the growth of the world’s most scalable brokerage
- You will lead a team dedicated to building tools that help agents grow their business and enhance engagement with their clients
- This team focuses on empowering agents by developing solutions that optimize client interactions, drive business growth, and provide agents with the resources they need to succeed
- Provide strategic direction and ownership to Compass software architecture
- Build, develop, and scale the platform that empowers real estate professionals, buyers, and sellers
- Become a domain expert in real estate technology, serving as an empathetic partner to our customers
- Inspire, recruit, and mentor fellow engineers
- Lead in the architecting of our distributed microservices architecture
- Operate in a scalable engineering culture that leverages modern principles of decoupled systems and automated CI/CD/testing/monitoring to drive efficiencies
- Execute on standard agile development methodology

Our take
Compass uses an AI-driven platform to smooth out and speed up the process of buying, selling, or renting property. It functions much like a traditional broker, but employs tech to reduce the time, uncertainty, cost and friction of transactions for buyers, sellers & agents.
It's disrupting a sector so far largely averse to tech innovation, allowing users to close deals in less time than the industry average of 30-45 days. Compass is now the largest independent real estate brokerage in the USA, with over 29,000 agents nationwide.
Despite being a leading residential brokerage and competing well, Compass has remained unprofitable. While the company is replanning its cost structure to be profitable over the next year, it announced its third round of payoffs in early January 2023. Its profit-generating plans include expanding into mortgages, escrow & title services.
