Company mission

Whatnot missions is to enable anyone to turn their passion into a business and bring people together through commerce.

Role

Who you are

  • You have proven experience recruiting for G&A roles as well as managing a recruiting team. Your roots are in identifying and evaluating candidates for a variety of functions and roles, and you enjoy the challenge of finding (and helping your team to find) outstanding talent for hard-to-fill positions from early career to Director-level roles
  • You are a leader and a builder at heart. You bring 6+ years experience leading recruiting pods and you get energy from building foundational processes and principles
  • You are experienced in giving direct feedback and helping to grow and empower a team. You set strategy, you lean in and get into the weeds and you inspire your team to do their best work
  • You are a champion for diversity hiring & inclusive interview practices. At Whatnot, we believe hiring and fostering a diverse team is the key to building a successful business. You should be passionate about these initiatives and have experience creating a strategy for building diverse teams
  • You are comfortable with ownership. Whatnot is one of the fastest-growing startups in history, and hiring is critical to our success. You should feel comfortable moving uncomfortably fast and being responsible for your work
  • You provide an incredible candidate experience. You sweat the small stuff but keep the big picture in mind. You know that a job search is can be an overwhelming and complicated journey for candidates, so you prioritize providing a more human experience for everyone that interacts with Whatnot during a hiring process
  • You are data-focused. You track pipeline health to balance your priorities and set hiring manager expectations

What the job involves

  • Act as the subject matter authority on all things G&A recruiting - People, Legal, Finance, Operations and more! You can act as a guide in what motivates and drives the team to hire the best talent to the these opportunities and can make recommendations to hiring managers & fellow recruiters to drive success
  • Identify passionate candidates. This is a player coach role-you will always have at least a couple of key roles you're running to stay close to the work
  • Empower your team to find or build new sources of talent. LinkedIn might be a great tool, but you'll always look for new and outstanding ways to source versatile folks
  • Set the pace for and drive your team to successfully juggle a variety of roles at once. At any given time, individuals on your team could be working on filling 8-10 (or more at times) open roles
  • Manage team's work with regard to developing job posts, hiring plans, and rubrics. You'll work with the VP of Talent to help further operationalize and build many of these founding processes
  • Emphasize diversity and inclusivity. You'll lead your team in identifying traditional and non-traditional methods to increase the likelihood we can bring new perspectives to the team
  • Empower your team to iterate on the candidate hiring process. You'll smooth rough edges in the interview process by analyzing data and presenting solutions to the team
  • Cultivate senior relationships with individuals and groups. You'll help build personal relationships through introductions, references, or by facilitating participation with community groups
  • By analyzing data and presenting solutions to the team

Our take

The collectible toy market is large, and Whatnot has built a unique social platform that enables sellers to use livestreams to showcase their products and reach more buyers. The company’s focus is on collectible toys, some of which are rare and can cost thousands of dollars, and has also expanded to sports cards.

The idea of Whatnot was led by buyer trends. Instagram's live feature became a popular place for selling toys and trading cards, but of course was not set up to facilitate bidding or handling payments after a sale occurs. Whatnot combines live showcasing with follow-up sale capabilities, thus serving the community in a more novel way than established collectibles market players such as eBay.

The company has grown fast. It was established in 2019 and has already expanded from its original category - Funko Pop figurines - to Pokemon cards, pins, sports cards, and many more. There is still plenty of scope for expanding into new categories, as the company aims to establish itself as the go-to for this large niche, which will be facilitated by the strong levels of funding that Whatnot has raised.
