Role
Who you are
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school
- Admission to the bar in at least one US jurisdiction
- 8-10+ years of legal experience, preferably including roles in big law, financial services, or the FinTech space
- Expertise in public and private fund formation, on-shore/off-shore marketing laws, corporate governance, securities law, and commercial transactions
- Deep understanding of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940, the Securities Act of 1933, the Securities Exchange Act of 1934, and other relevant laws and regulations
- Experience and comfort interacting across levels of an organization, including senior management and external members
- Experience in managing legal aspects of product development in a tech environment
- Technologically savvy, with an interest in leveraging software and automation to optimize legal processes
- Proven strategic thinking skills, with the ability to think critically and creatively
- High level of conscientiousness, with a track record of bringing ideas from zero to one within an organization
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, dynamic startup environment with high levels of autonomy
- This is not your first rodeo - you’ve likely worked in big law, financial services, or the FinTech space before and are very familiar with alternative investments.

What the job involves
- Equi is seeking a General Counsel & Chief Compliance Officer who can take the lead and is excited to working hand-in-hand with our CEO to support the activities of our tech platform, registered closed end fund, and SEC registered RIA
- You will work closely with the leadership team to drive legal and strategic business excellence, while supporting the company's overall mission
- You would oversee our unregistered funds, publicly registered closed-end funds, future product development, and the overall legal strategy of the firm
- You will develop, implement, and own the legal strategy for the firm leveraging a combination of internal and external resources
- Fund Structuring & Product Development (40%)
- Lead on- and off-shore fund formation and marketing initiatives
- Work closely with the technology development team to advise on legal and regulatory aspects of platform innovation
- Advise the team on the laws governing our registered investment advisor and the products we offer via our digital platform
- Advise on securities law implications across all company operations
- Oversee business operations including oversight of human resources and finance
- Legal Strategy & Compliance (40%)
- Develop and implement the firm's legal and regulatory strategy
- Own compliance and risk management programs
- Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and standards relating to unregistered funds, publicly registered closed-end funds, and future product development
- Advise on corporate governance, general corporate matters, and capital market operations
- Corporate Matters & Risk Management (20%)
- Oversee all legal aspects of financial transactions and commercial agreements
- Update and maintain Firm documents
- Structure, draft and negotiate complex transaction agreements including business agreements, investment advisory agreements, engagement letters, confidentiality agreements, employment agreements, and corporate governance records
- Ensure effective corporate governance practices across the organization
- Establish robust risk management strategies, aligning them with the company's overall mission and growth trajectory
Our take
When investing, individuals tend towards passive indexes of stocks and bonds, but the wealthy elite rely on complex portfolios of alternative investments – which is where they make most of their returns. These portfolios rely on teams of skilled investment professionals and carry large operating expenses, making them inaccessible to the average investor. Equi uses technology to mimic these teams, providing access to portfolios of diverse and typically inaccessible investments for individuals to make the most of their money.
Equi was founded in 2020 in response to the lack of diversified portfolios for the average investor. Its original product still required significant funds, with a minimum investment of $1 million, but the company has reduced this by over half to $350k. With this change, the company now caters for all accredited investors, which represent roughly 1 in 10 households in the US. Its ultimate goal is to present portfolios for all individual investors.
Past funding raised by Equi went towards the reduction in minimum investment, and it can be expected that further rounds would also contribute towards its goal of providing alternative investment access for everyone. Its flagship portfolio boasts an impressive annual target return between 17 and 23% and the company received significant investment over 2022, though only time can tell whether Equi can continue to deliver such high returns across long periods.
