Masters or PhD in CS / EE or equivalent with stellar academic performance
6-10 years of direct Machine Learning or Deep Learning experience in a corporate environment (post academia)

What the job involves

We are looking for a versatile engineer who has demonstrated capabilities to develop, benchmark and validate a wide variety of deep neural network architectures to extract knowledge and information from images in real-time
Develop state-of-the-art and novel deep neural network architectures
Develop training & testing pipelines to assess the performance of architectures on relevant image processing tasks
Keep up with deep learning literature and research publications in order to implement the latest techniques into our networks and pipelines
Develop machine-learning algorithms on a breadth of software frameworks (Keras, TensorFlow, Torch) and deploy on a diversity of hardware platforms

Our take

Even in the largest retailers, inventory systems are usually manual, with staff checking inventory to get an idea of stock numbers, spoilage and other metrics. These are slow and introduce a high degree of human error, as well as being difficult to carry out around shoppers.

Focal Systems leverages a network of low-cost, ruggedized cameras and computer vision to scan a store's shelves automatically, alerting the backroom of the need to restock an area of the store in real time. In a time when retailers are facing staff shortages and supply chain issues, this kind of automation is in high demand, as is evidenced by Focal System's customer base which includes the likes of Walmart, ShopRite and Piggly Wiggly.

Having raised an impressive amount of funding, Focal Systems is doubling down on R&D and expanding its global sales and engineering teams. As more brick-and-mortar retailers begin adopting automated solutions, Focal Systems is in a strong position to continue its growth.
