Who you are
- You enjoy breaking down complex technical problems and iterating quickly, taking ownership from ideation to production
- Your skills include Java (or similar object-oriented programming language), and a strong understanding of systems design, data structures, and algorithms
- Bonus: Experience with technologies such as Scala, Flyte, Apache Iceberg, Dataflow, Airflow or collaborating with data engineers to build impactful tools and pipelines
- Bonus: Experience working in data quality or data monitoring using tools such as Great Expectations or SQL Soda, and with concepts such Counters or Data SLOs
- You are curious and customer-focused, excited to work closely with internal teams and open-source communities to build reliable solutions

- We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to join our Data Quality and Observability team
- You’ll work on innovative tools and scalable systems that empower data practitioners and developers to collaborate effectively, ensuring reliability and accuracy across Spotify’s data platform
- Whether it’s building backend services, optimizing pipelines, or supporting teams in delivering insights, your contributions will directly impact the way the world experiences audio
- Build and maintain backend services and data pipelines used by thousands of engineers and data practitioners
- Participate in scaling systems while collaborating with teammates, stakeholders, and leaders
- Gain hands-on experience in understanding user workflows to create tools that improve data quality, observability and reliability
- Design and implement new AI integrations to power the future of data quality
- Engage in hack days, hack weeks, and community events to learn, share, and grow

Spotify was founded in an attempt to combat the rampant music piracy that was causing significant harm to the industry. The company has since taken music streaming mainstream and now has 180m+ paying subscribers across the world.
With features that include a highly accessible interface and a vast catalogue of artists, Spotify's strong brand has been able to maintain growth in spite of fierce competition from deep-pocketed rivals like Amazon and Apple. The company has achieved this by making smart acquisitions to move into other verticals to strengthen its offerings, especially podcasting, by acquiring Gimlet Media, Anchor and Parcast.
Spotify's future plans include rapid growth with a goal to become a one-stop destination for all digital sound, as well as AI and NFT integrations. However, high costs incurred from the acquisition of exclusive podcasts, increasing competitor strength, and weak bottom-line growth mean that the company must find a balance to maintain its position in the sector.
