Who you are
- Proven background in marketing communications to targeted audiences using a range of channels
- Confident working with print and broadcast media, with a track record of securing coverage
- Comfortable working cross-departmentally and with external partners to meet deadlines and deliver shared objectives
- Skilled in social media management, website content updates and using content management systems
- Able to tailor messages for different audiences and represent the Woodland Trust professionally and positively
- A degree in communications e.g. CIPR-equivalent qualification is advantageous
What the job involves
- The Woodland Trust is looking for a Communications Officer to drive media coverage and engaging content across Northern Ireland
- This role is advertised as full-time, 37.5 hours per week, however we would consider applications from those wanting reduced hours at 30 hours per week
- Plan and deliver the annual communications plan for Northern Ireland, aligning with national strategy while showcasing local projects and impact
- Prepare press releases, pitch stories, secure coverage and respond to media enquiries across print, broadcast and digital outlets
- Produce engaging copy for the website, social media, e-newsletters, magazines and promotional materials
- Manage PR activity for key events, including photo opportunities and celebrity involvement
- Work closely with the Brand & Communications team to localise national stories and ensure consistency of messaging
- Track communications activity in Northern Ireland and report on reach, engagement and outcomes
- This is a hybrid position with a mix of home working, and from our office in Bangor, Northern Ireland. Office attendance would be required no more than once a month on average. Occasional travel to other offices and remote locations may also be required
- This is a fixed term contract until end of December 2026

Our take
The UK is more tree-poor than many realise, with forest and woodland covering only around 13.5% of the country's land area. That means large areas once covered by native woods have been lost or degraded over centuries, reducing habitat for wildlife, weakening carbon storage, and limiting the natural benefits trees give people.
The Woodland Trust is a charity on a mission to protect, restore, and create native woods and trees across the UK. Since its founding it's planted more than 68.5M trees and cares for over 1,000 woods around the country. Through planting native trees, restoring damaged woodlands, protecting ancient woods from destruction, and encouraging nature-rich habitats, the Trust has become the largest woodland conservation in the country and hopes to fight climate change and give people access to nature for generations to come.
To do so, its recently been growing its collaborative work with larger partners. The Trust renewed a partnership with Lincolnshire County Council and together they're set to plant nearly 300,000 more trees, along with new hedgerows and expanded woodland projects that will help bring more nature back into local towns and countryside. This kind of effort makes a huge difference, helping communities across the country feel the benefits of greener, healthier places to live.
