Who you are
- Relevant academic qualifications (degree/masters)
- Extensive knowledge of compensation and benefit programs with a minimum of 10 years of experience
- Experience in a leadership position / leading and managing teams
- Experience in a global organisation advantageous
- Financial ability to identify and implement cost-effective programs

What the job involves
- Develop, lead and implement an end-to-end compensation strategy, that is attractive, transparent, & effective and which clearly aligns to Frontiers’ competencies, behaviours and culture codes
- Develop, maintain and audit regularly the job evaluation system that ensures fair and equitable compensation practices
- Strategize, plan, create and oversee every element of the organisation’s remuneration system ensuring fairness and equity
- Provide guidance and support to managers on compensation-related issues, including job offers, promotions, and salary adjustments
- Creation and communication of a robust annual salary review process with governance framework that ensures all relevant documentation is collated and input into the relevant systems
- Measure the impact and relevance of the benefits, including health and wellness programmes
- Knowledge of legislation governing benefit plans within the European Union, APAC and USA (for example ERISA, COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, PPACA) would be considered a plus
- Perform and communicate market sensing by obtaining knowledge of competitive practices within labour markets
- Perform trend analysis by understanding the competitive environment in which the business interacts
- Promote campaigns to raise awareness and foster a culture of diversity and inclusiveness in the organisation
- Maintaining excellent relationships while reporting back to senior management with accurate and timely reports on the relevant data
- Ensure compliance with all relevant labour laws and regulations on a global scale
- Be responsible for the rewards (compensation and benefits and pensions) expenditure and budgeting, making sure budgets and expenditures are kept within aligned agreements and submit proposals for additional spending
Our take
Frontiers Media is a publishing company that is home to nearly 180 peer-reviewed journals in the fields of science, medicine, and technology. This voluminous reach has made it the 3rd most-cited and 9th largest research publisher, and helped it generate substantial revenue.
Because it’s an open-access (OA) publisher, Frontiers charges publishing fees to authors. These can run upwards of $3,000, which in combination with the sheer volume of content makes for a hefty income stream. It is, however, reportedly the company’s only income stream, which could spell trouble for a business designed to put out only high-quality research.
Frontiers Media has in fact already had various run-ins with the academic establishment for its supposedly fairly permissive reviews process. Reports suggest papers are widely solicited and difficult for reviewers to actually reject, leading the company to be included on an influential list of potentially predatory OA publications.
It’s a reputation that Frontiers Media has struggled to shake off in some fields, but successfully overridden in others as it expands outwards into new sub-sectors. Journal multiplication has been an astute business strategy, and will certainly help it cement its leading position going forward.
