Role
Who you are
- 8-15 years of experience in payments, fintech, SaaS, or payment operations roles
- Direct experience with platform payments or marketplace models (Stripe, Adyen, or similar)
- Strong understanding of payment performance levers (fraud, chargebacks, approval optimization, settlement) and regulatory frameworks (KYC/KYB, AML, PCI, card network rules)
- Hands-on experience in operational risk management, including onboarding risk, transaction monitoring, and chargeback processes
- Proven ability to design scalable processes, implement controls, and own operational metrics
- Excellent problem-solving and data analysis skills; comfortable using tools/SQL to dive into payments data
- Demonstrated cross-functional collaboration skills with Product, Engineering, Support, and Finance
- 2+ years of experience leading or mentoring a team, with readiness and excitement to roll up sleeves as an individual contributor in the short term
- Entrepreneurial mindset: thrives in ambiguity, adapts quickly, and takes ownership to drive outcomes
What the job involves
- Owner.com is building the all-in-one platform that helps independent restaurants grow and thrive. Payments are core to our mission - restaurants depend on us to reliably process tens of millions of online orders today. We’re looking for a Director of Payments Operations to design and scale our payments operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and reliability as we continue to expand our payments offering
- Design and implement scalable payment operations processes and controls, ensuring reliable reconciliation, dispute handling, and settlement
- Oversee operational risk management (onboarding reviews, transaction monitoring, chargebacks) and partner with Product/Analytics on risk model improvements
- Monitor and improve payment performance metrics (approval rates, chargeback ratios, settlement timeliness) to enhance merchant trust and retention
- Partner with Product, Engineering and Analytics to automate operational workflows, reduce manual intervention, and embed ops requirements into product design
- Ensure regulatory compliance and risk management as Owner.com evolves its payments infrastructure and prepares for new markets and payments channels
- Collaborate closely with Support to improve merchant experiences and streamline escalations
- Develop operational playbooks, dashboards, and reporting to provide visibility into performance and risk
- Lead remediation of operational incidents and drive continuous improvement
- Over time, hire and grow a high-performing Payment Operations team
- Report directly to the GM of Payments and partner with leadership to shape Owner.com’s payments strategy, expanding beyond online ordering into additional payment channels and technologies
- Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Support teams to embed and scale payments across the platform
- Align with Finance and Compliance on reconciliation, reporting, and regulatory needs
Our take
The Pandemic caused a major upheaval in the US restaurant industry. Smaller operations struggled to stay afloat amidst brick-and-mortar closures, and as the demand for home delivery soared their margins were tightened further by hefty third-party delivery app charges. Add to that the fact that consumers become customers of the delivery app, not the restaurant itself, and it’s a development that has spelt real trouble for independent locales. Owner has set out to level the playing field.
Owner’s platform provides independent restaurants with the infrastructure they need to take control of their business without deferring to third-party apps like GrubHub and Deliveroo. It offers marketing, online ordering, and support solutions to over 1,000 restaurants across the U.S. The company has taken impressive first strides, too: they have a 7 figure run-rate, over 105% monthly revenue retention, and helped restaurants avoid millions in online order platform fees.
It’s a hugely attractive proposition for independent business owners, and research suggests it’s a winning idea for consumers too. Over 60% say they’d prefer to deal with restaurants directly, but historically the infrastructure simply hasn’t been in place to do so. With Owner seeing impressive traction by tripling its customers between 2023 and 2024, it's unsurprising that its 2024 funding is being channelled into engineering and design teams, alongside the development of new tools.
