Who you are
- This is a unique opportunity for a hands-on technical leader with a strong background in server or complex systems hardware design, and a proven track record of mentoring and leading teams to success
- Bachelors or master’s in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics or a related technical field
- 12+ years of experience in server/switch or other complex systems hardware design, with 5+ years in a management and leadership role
- Strong technical background with hands-on experience in electrical, mechanical and thermal systems architecture, design, and validation (EVT/DVT)
- Experience with high-speed PCB board design, bring up, validation and debug, including a good working knowledge of the following digital interfaces: I2C, SPI, JTAG, USB, PCIe, Ethernet (SGMII, RMII, QFSP), DDR Memory
- Expertise in DFX, particularly in the design advanced electro-mechanical packaging technologies as used in high end AI and ML server systems, with a demonstrated focus on manufacturability, reliability and cost
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
- Demonstrated experience with design tools such as SolidWorks, and PLM systems such as Arena is highly preferred
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues
- Experience managing directors, managers and high-level ICs, with strong aptitude for mentoring and growing team members and driving open collaboration with stakeholders
What the job involves
- We are seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to head our diverse team of hardware engineers at Tenstorrent. As a senior leader, you will drive innovation in AI/ML hardware systems, guiding electrical, mechanical, and thermal engineers to deliver cutting-edge products that meet market demands and exceed customer expectations
- With a focus on fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment, you will oversee the full product development lifecycle, from concept to deployment, ensuring high-quality, timely delivery
- This role is hybrid, based out of Toronto, Canada
- Lead, mentor, and inspire a diverse team of electrical, mechanical, and thermal engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement
- Recruit, hire and retain top talent to ensure the continued growth and success of Tenstorrent and to meet product development objectives
- Drive execution within the hardware engineering team to design Tenstorrent’s future products to meet marketing requirements and delight our customers
- Oversee the end-to-end product development lifecycle, from concept and design to development, testing, and deployment, ensuring timely and high-quality delivery
- Drive technological innovation within the organization, staying ahead of trends in the AI/ML systems space, and identifying opportunities for new product features and enhancements
- Assess and address customer and factory product issues by ensuring the right expertise is prioritized to understand and root cause the issue, and resource engineering projects to resolve such issues
- Work closely with program management to plan projects and identify risks and mitigation strategies early to ensure the successful delivery of products
- Plan and manage the hardware engineering budget so the organization has the right tools and lab environment for success, while ensuring efficient use of resources

Tenstorrent is a US- and Canada-based semiconductor startup specializing in processors for AI workloads. Rather than building gneral-purpose CPUs or GPus, the company develops custom chips and sofrware optimized for running moder AI models. As demand for AI accelerates, and as a global chip shortage reshapes the semiconductor industry, these trends have become strong tailwinds for Tenstorrent.
The company’s unique approach is to build for this future software, which it believes will be written at a higher level. Combining this with conditional computing, Tenstorrent supports a scalable distributed network approach that is analogous to a human brain.
While the market for specialized AI hardware is destined to be gigantic, the company has to compete with a plethora of hopeful startups (as well as major tech companies like NVIDIA and Qualcomm). That said, Tenstorrent boasts an excellent trajectory so far, with its latest moves including unveiling its high-end Wormhole AI processors, and a partnership with LG which will see the development of chips for "Affectionate Intelligence".
