  • SQL and data modelling are second nature to you, and you are comfortable with general Data Warehousing concepts
  • You are committed to continuous improvement, proactively identifying opportunities and addressing challenges in your work and the work of others
  • You have experience building robust and reliable data sets that require a high level of control
  • You enjoy working with cross functional fast moving teams and are passionate about serving our customers

What the job involves

  • We're looking for a Lead Analytics Engineer within our Operations team to help build world class service for the bank of the future.
  • You will play a critical role in overseeing our foundational data platforms, identifying and driving opportunities to enhance our current capabilities.
  • Your expertise will be pivotal in allowing us to scale into new markets and working with partners internally and externally to ensure we can design and build a first class system to meet our customers’ needs
  • You’ll work closely within our Operations Collective with product and engineering teams to build out our forecasting and routing systems, while partnering with our core operations team to enable a fast and agile workforce
  • Serving as a data architect for Monzo’s Operations data, contributing to the design and scalability of data models that measure the performance of our Operations product suite
  • Develop robust data models downstream of backend services, primarily in BigQuery, to support internal reporting, machine learning, large language models, as well as financial and regulatory use cases
  • Scoping, building and leading through others the re-architecture of entire domains across Operations (including data about our workforce and about demands of our customers)
  • Be a key voice in shaping and maintaining best practices for our Data Warehouse, including source data payload design, logical data modelling, implementation, metadata, and testing standards
  • Collaboratively set standards and work with data across Monzo, fostering knowledge sharing and continuously improving data practices
  • Contribute to prioritising data governance issues, ensuring a comprehensive approach to data integrity and compliance
  • Being a key technical leader who’s able to champion central platform initiatives that aim to elevate the data standards across Operations and beyond

Our take

Monzo is a challenger bank that fully operates online and offers a full range of current, savings, business accounts, and more. The speed of the challenger banks to provide a great experience has been impressive, and the number of competitors appearing has proven the consumer desire for innovation.

Monzo remains one of the popular online banks, with more than 6 million customer active users. The company faces competition as more traditional banks, such as Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan, have launched their own digital banks. However, the new technologies that the company is built on enable it to expand quickly (with fewer issues) than the incumbent players' offerings.

With an increasing amount of people switching banks, the company's ever-expanding suite of banking and financial services (such as its buy-now-pay-later offering) has resulted in Monzo receiving the second-highest net switching gains among digital challenger banks (just behind Starling).

After setting U.S. expansion plans aside in 2020, the company launched in the U.S. market in early 2022, partnering with Sutton Bank to provide its U.S. accounts. After several years focused on narrowing its losses, Monzo hit profitability in the first two months of 2023. In the same year, 2 million new customers joined, tallying its customer base at 9 million in 2024.
