Role
Who you are
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a deep understanding of optimisation methods (e.g. linear/integer programming, constraint programming, heuristics)
- Proven ability to translate complex models into production-grade solutions with measurable business impact
- Experience working with or integrating optimisation solvers (e.g. Gurobi, CPLEX, OR-Tools) into software systems
- Solid coding skills (Python preferred, though experience in other languages like C++, Java, or Go is also valued)
- Curiosity, creativity, and a strong sense of ownership - you enjoy solving open-ended problems and shipping solutions that matter
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Senior Optimisation / Operations Research Engineer with a passion for solving complex, high-impact operational problems
- As part of HIVED’s Routing Squad, you’ll work on some of the most intellectually demanding challenges in computer science - building cutting-edge optimisation and forecasting systems that drive supply-demand matching and efficient route planning at scale
- Your work will directly enhance our core delivery engine and help create a competitive edge through technology
- You'll collaborate within a cross-functional team of engineers, data analysts, and data scientists to build production-grade optimisation systems that are robust, scalable, and deeply integrated into HIVED’s operations
- This is an opportunity to combine theoretical rigour with real-world application and see the tangible impact of your work every day
- Design and implement optimisation models and algorithms for routing, supply-demand matching, and other core logistics challenges
- Work closely with engineers, data scientists and analysts to integrate optimisation logic into production systems
- Lead the exploration and evaluation of new approaches - from linear programming and heuristics to machine learning-based optimisation
- Partner with product and operational stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into technical solutions
- Contribute to forecasting and planning systems that power strategic and tactical decisions across the business
- Continuously improve the performance, scalability, and robustness of our optimisation stack
- Technologies we use:
- Backend languages: Python, Go
- Tech infrastructure: AWS, CDK (TypeScript), Lambda, SQS, EventBridge, RDS, DynamoDB
- Data tooling: GCP, BigQuery, Looker, Looker Studio
- Observability: Loki, Tempo, Grafana, Prometheus
- Event-driven architecture and domain-driven design

Our take
Parcel delivery currently relies on fossil-fuel powered vans for the most part — and they pollute the air we breathe, emit large amounts of CO₂ and congest our cities. At the same time, customer service is notoriously poor, unethical business practices are rampant, and the technology is outdated. HIVED offers an alternative: 100% electric delivery, cutting emissions by up to 76%.
The company's technology is so efficient, it can match – or sometimes even be cheaper – than the current high-emission carriers. HIVED fundamentally sets itself apart from larger competitors by ensuring deliveries are 100% emission free, which will be a significant advantage for it as the UK is witnessing a green economic boom in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
The industry's expansion grew to $141.05 bn globally in 2025, which will undoubtedly be underpinned by a push towards sustainability. HIVED is well-positioned to capitalise on this, particularly if it can maintain its current high standards off the back of its impressive 2025 Series B investment round.
