Role
Who you are
- A leader in data engineering, data lake/warehousing or BI solutions with several years of experience in designing and building solutions with high-throughput technologies
- You have a proven record of successfully integrating business-critical data from different sources into a common platform
- Extensive experience in the following technologies:
- Microsoft SQL Server Development
- Microsoft SQL Server BI
- Azure and Azure DevOps
- Knowledge of data visualisation, dashboarding and exploration tools (e.g. DataStudio, Looker, Tableau, PowerBI)
- Performance optimisation, including query tuning, analysing metrics from monitoring tools and reducing deadlocks and timeouts
- Previous experience with the following is a bonus:
- Synapse / Databricks
- Segment / Hightouch / Snowplow
- Stitch / Fivetran
What the job involves
- Lead the refactoring of complex systems or problems making pragmatic trade-offs between perfection and technical debt which aligns with our priorities as a business
- Lead the team and business in the migration from our heritage SQL DW estate into a modern and scalable solution
- Ensuring heritage systems are continued to be maintained at a high standard and managing short to medium-term improvements where required
- Lead the existing team and contribute towards delivering high quality code by improving coding standards and best practices, taking into account wider requirements such as performance, reliability, availability, scalability and security
- Proactively contribute to the wider engineering department, through knowledge sharing, and architectural forums
- Enable the growth of the engineering department by supporting hiring, onboarding, and giving effective feedback
- Lead good agile team outcomes ensuring engineering decisions are made which factor in technical debt, systems design, stability/reliability, monitoring/observability and business needs
- Data innovation. You will lead the team in identifying areas of innovation in data tools and techniques, and recognise appropriate timing for adoption
- Metadata management. You can design an appropriate metadata repository and present changes to existing metadata repositories. You can understand a range of tools for storing and working with metadata. You can provide oversight and advice to more inexperienced members of the team
- Problem resolution (data). You can ensure that the most appropriate actions are taken to resolve problems as they occur. You can coordinate teams to resolve problems and to implement solutions and preventative measures
- Testing. You can review requirements and specifications, and define test conditions. You can identify issues and risks associated with work. You can analyse and report test activities and results
- Manage communication between the technical and non-technical. You can listen to the needs of technical and business stakeholders, and interpret them. You can effectively manage stakeholder expectations. You can manage active and reactive communication. You can support or host difficult discussions within the team or with diverse senior stakeholders
