Who you are
- A PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field, with publications in top-tier venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, EMNLP)
- Deep expertise in code LLMs and agent systems, with a strong understanding of the latest research and trends
- Hands-on experience with frontier LLMs and their applications in code generation or automation
- Strong software engineering skills, with proficiency in Python and PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar frameworks
- Experience with distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and scalable architectures
- Excellent communication and organizational skills, with the ability to lead and motivate a team
- A proactive, self-motivated mindset, with a passion for solving ambitious, open-ended problems
Desirable
- Experience managing or leading technical teams
- Familiarity with reinforcement learning or multi-agent systems
- Contributions to open-source projects or tools related to code LLMs or agents
What the job involves
- Code-generating LLMs and autonomous agents are revolutionizing how software is built and tasks are automated. At Cohere, we’re pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with these technologies for enterprises, and we’re looking for a Lead for the Agent Code Teams to spearhead this effort.
- You’ll be at the forefront of research and engineering, driving the development of cutting-edge code LLMs and agent systems that can interact with the digital world to solve complex tasks with minimal human oversight
- This role is hands-on and research-driven. You’ll dive into the latest literature on code LLMs and agents, experiment with frontier models, and lead a team of talented engineers and researchers to build scalable, production-ready solutions

- Stay up-to-date with the latest research in code LLMs, agents, and related fields, leading the implementation of novel ideas into our systems
- Design and implement scalable strategies to train code models, and deploy agent frameworks for inference and sampling
- Lead experiments on our state-of-the-art compute infrastructure, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with frontier LLMs
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate agent systems into real-world applications
- Mentor and guide team members, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous learning
Our take
The AI industry biggest stakeholders insist that the next step in enhancing web experiences will be through natural language interactions. While this may be true, only companies with considerable resources can reasonably address the gap needed to bring NLP to the forefront of web integration. Cohere was founded to address this shortfall between NLP development, widespread usage, and the resources required.
Cohere works on building top-of-the-class NLP processing models and software which it makes available to customers through APIs and custom solutions. In a strategic move, the company has partnered with Google Cloud, giving them access to resources that will undoubtedly push the field of NLP forward. This allows Cohere to serve as middlemen by offering a wide range of customers a product built on unmatched technology.
AI is currently a worldwide talking point and so it is no surprise that Cohere has seen rapid development, and raised $270M in a 2023 funding round. The company plans to introduce a dialogue model that would resemble ChatGPT, however, in this case, its technology would be mainly accessible to developers and businesses.
