Role
Who you are
- 4-7 years in product/service design with shipped work in real cross-functional teams (PM, design, engineering collaboration, not agency handoffs)
- Research discipline: You've run your own Mom-test style interviews, usability tests, and prototypes; you iterate based on findings. No "design by assumption"
- High-fidelity UI craft: You can execute beautiful, consistent, accessible UI in Figma. Your work is finished and polished, not rough. You design for clarity, calm, and empathy
- Design systems: You've built lightweight component libraries (buttons, typography, inputs) that developers can use immediately
- Comfortable with discovery-led work: You're energised by "we don't know yet" conversations and will help us figure out what to build
- Product thinking: You own business outcomes alongside UX; you understand that design decisions have consequences
Desirable
- Mission alignment: You're genuinely interested in designing for vulnerable users or sensitive moments (grief, financial decisions, legal complexity, medical choices)
- AI-savvy: You use AI tools for synthesis, ideation, and prototyping; you review and edit outputs for quality and see it as a thinking partner, not magic
- Accessibility-first: Deep knowledge of WCAG 2.1 AA (contrast, sizing) for older demographics
- Service design thinking: You think about service ecosystems, not just the app
What the job involves
- Discovery: Run customer interviews (Mom-test style) with PM and Eng lead. Map pain points. Test assumptions with prototypes. Synthesise research (use AI tools for speed, validate with team). Come in with an open mind
- Design: Design experiences that reduce cognitive load and anxiety. Think about service ecosystems, not just the app. Design for moments where humans matter most, with clarity, calm, and accessibility
- Design System: Build and maintain a lightweight Figma component library to enable the developer to ship fast
- Prototyping: Move from low-fi sketches to high-fidelity, clickable prototypes that feel 'real' for user testing
- Equal Partner: Work as an equal voice in decision-making. Challenge the team on user needs and whether we're solving the real problem. Help define what success looks like
Our take
In the past, the majority of people have not prepared for death. However, in recent years, an increasing number of people are talking and planning for it as one of life’s key events. Funerals shifting towards meaningful celebration of life parties is a prime example of this.
Aura is an online platform where people facing end of life can leave an online legacy for their loved ones. It was founded in 2017 by Paul Jameson after he was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, but wanted to embrace life, plan ahead and leave his family in the best position possible.
Since then, it has helped thousands of people tackle their hardships and is now run by Jameson’s family. The company has grown to offer celebration of life funeral planning, end-of-life support and the Aura Circle (a digital community of 30k people). With an important mission, Aura has great potential to build a significant business that impacts lots of people, and has attracted several rounds of angel investment to help it on its way.
