Who you are
- You can function independently and in a team environment— you are proactive in unblocking processes and are always stewarding its success

- Ability to communicate design concepts and story tell through sketches and wireframes
- Experience in demonstrating how your work has impacted business goals
- Excellent communication skills and aptitude to explain design rationale and decisions
- Knowledge of web-best practices and experience working closely and iteratively with developers
- You dabble in code, illustration, or motion graphics (not all three, unless you are then we all need to get on your level)
What the job involves
- Ownership from pencil to pixel: Guide projects from concept to delivery. You will be involved from strategy (why are we doing this? who is this for?) to structure (how are we building this?) to surface (how can we make this beautiful?)
- Design as a verb: Be an advocate for not only thoughtful design artifacts, but design process. Not only can you create digital experiences that are amazing to look at, but are meaningful for users
- Collaboration: You will collaborate with cross-functional team mates: marketers, developers, and other stakeholders. At the end of the day, we are a small nimble team and we value effective communication and compassion for each other
- Blank canvas: You are an early member of the design team. You will influence and impact design team culture and design at the organization. As a member of the design team we support and mentor each other
Application process
- Initial hello! (30 min)
- This is a “getting to know you” chat for both parties. You’ll learn more about Hex and the people behind it. We will learn more about your past experience + hopes and dreams for your career
- Portfolio Panel Presentation (1 hour)
- You’ll walk through 2-3 case studies that demonstrate your skills, design process, your role specifically, who was involved, the outcomes, and challenges. Please allow for questions throughout. We recommend planning for 15 mins of questions and answers. You will be joined by 2-3 Hex employees
- Demo (30 min - optional)
- Get a demo of Hex and learn about our users from one of our passionate product experts
- Critique Exercise (45 min)
- We'll ask you to critique 2 websites live, putting yourself in the shoes of a new user. One will be a product provided by us, and we'll ask you to bring the other. While critiquing, we'll ask you to consider the overall objective of the business/product and how visual aesthetics, brand, and UX/interaction design impact a user's experience and goals
- Design Process and Working Cross-functionally (45 min)
- You'll chat with one or two folks from our Marketing team about the design process and how you work with others around the organization to get things done
- Meet the team (30 min)
- This isn't an exercise or an interview, but dedicated time for you to connect with other members of the team!
- Hiring Manager Sync / Fit (45 min)
- You will go deeper into anything that came up during the interview process. We will additionally dig into your growth goals + fit
Our take
Nowadays, every business wants to make the most of their data, but data teams can struggle with efficiency due to the number of tools they must use in their work. Hex offers a new, fully collaborative kind of workspace for data teams, eliminating the workflow problems caused by context switching, and increasing the ease with which teams can share work.
Classically, analysts and data scientists must switch between various notepads and dashboards whilst working. As well as causing time loss with every switch, this fragmentation of their toolbox can also be a hindrance to collaboration. Hex supplies real-time data notebooks and interactive applications to enable teams to share work from start to end so that companies make the most of their data investments.
Hex has received substantial funding which will go towards continuing to build its platform, growing the product, and expanding go-to-market teams. The company announced an integration with dbt – the industry standard for data transformation – to offer a heightened experience for its growing list of shared customers.
