Who you are
- 10+ years of software development experience building highly reliable, mission-critical software
- A strong foundation in computer science fundamentals, such as algorithmic complexity, asynchronicity, and distributed computing
- Good Knowledge on design and architecture concepts
- Familiarity with Agile software development processes and software testing
- Experience in shipping pragmatic and high quality solutions with a sense of urgency
- Track record of technical leadership across teams without formal people management
- Comfortable operating in ambiguity and driving clarity where none exists
- Ability and desire to work in an open and team-oriented environment
What the job involves
- We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Expert Research mission that drives all expert call services at AlphaSense. We're a collaborative group of full-stack teams responsible for everything from the internal systems that support 9,000+ monthly expert calls to enhancing how users engage with this content in the AlphaSense frontend. Our tech stack includes Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, Vue.js, and React
- As part of our team, you’ll help streamline workflows for over 250 analysts, integrate third-party data sources, create new content flywheels to expand our world-class expert library, collaborate with our ML teams to embed AI into the product, and contribute to the frontends relied upon by tens of thousands of users every day
- Build robust, well-designed and effective software that solves complex problems
- Test, review and deploy code quickly. We deploy over 10 times per day and manage major releases with feature flags rather than coordinated deployments
- Research, learn and share new techniques for solving complex engineering problems. We’re a highly collaborative team and we push each other to find better solutions every day
- Write tools and develop practices for the engineering team. From GraphQL-to-Typescript compilers to fully automated deployments, we take the time to invest heavily in our own productivity
- Own projects from end-to-end. On a given day you might be building a system to measure search engine performance, reworking an integration with a telephony provider, or designing a UI component library
- Analyze and design solutions to business problems. Companies that throw solutions over the wall to engineers are wasting half their abilities. At AlphaSense, you’ll be fully involved in determining what to do, not just doing it
- Mentor senior engineers, shape technical culture, and raise expectations for system design and execution
- Contribute to long-term technical strategy while remaining hands-on with critical implementations
Our take
Manual research can be a serious pain: financial analysts spend hours every week searching through PDFs one keyword at a time, just to find a single usable insight. To remedy this, AlphaSense has built a smart search engine that slashes research time for analysts, using thousands of sources and a semantic indexing layer that can effectively query finance-specific language.
As a disruptor and market leader in this field, AlphaSense has few direct competitors, being most closely compared to Wolfram Alpha or LexisNexis. It helps that its tools are undoubtedly effective and valued by knowledge professionals: the company counts about 85% of the S&P 100 as customers and is trusted by J.P.Morgan, Microsoft, Credit Suisse and Google, among other major enterprises.
Having raised a large amount of funding over 2022 and 2023, AlphaSense has moved quickly to double down on its expansion in European markets, opening an office in Berlin to support this. With 2024 seeing investment from Singaporean EDBI, it has now set its sights on the Asia-Pacific region. As business intelligence will remain key for enterprises as they compete for market share, AlphaSense is well-placed for additional future growth.
