Who you are
- 2-4+ years of work experience in a role that required problem-solving and project management
- Exceptional communication, organizational, and analytical skills
- Ability to logic through complex operational questions and propose solutions to inform programmatic decisions
- Ability to manage day-to-day operations while simultaneously building more robust, efficient systems
- Demonstrated ability to work in a highly independent and self-directed manner, while effectively communicating upwardly about gaps and risks
- Enthusiasm for fast-paced environments, which may lack a pre-defined playbook for success and involve significant “learning by doing”
- Prior humanitarian experience a plus
- French or Spanish language fluency a plus

What the job involves
- Program Management
- Play a core operations role, leading aspects of project management as well as supporting Humanitarian Senior Managers and the Humanitarian Director on other tasks as required
- Support with designing operational models for new programs, including assessing trade-offs of different design decisions (e.g. targeting, payments, customer service)
- Track operational and efficiency metrics and report out to internal and external stakeholders
- Compile research on operational needs, such as registration, legal setup, country office setup, and more, to support entry into new geographies
- Support with dynamically identifying operational vulnerabilities (e.g. fraud, brand risk, etc.) and creating solutions to de-risk
- Become an expert in GiveDirectly’s tech systems and processes (Salesforce, Taroworks, Asana, etc.) to support project execution and excellence
- New business development & partnerships management
- Support partnership building and partner management by conducting due diligence and desk research for identified fundraising opportunities
- Conduct desk research & synthesis on humanitarian crises, financial payment systems, and funding opportunities in new countries of interest
- Coordinate with external stakeholders on discrete projects and tasks
- Other responsibilities
- Ad hoc strategy projects (e.g. develop a rapid response strategy and playbook) and other duties in support of Humanitarian and GiveDirectly team goals as needed
Our take
GiveDirectly is a non-profit organisation that specialises in giving direct cash transfers to low-income people, without strings attached. When the founder announced the idea in 2009, it was pretty radical at the time with many experts arguing the money would be misspent. However, 10 years later, there is now considerable evidence showing that cash improves the life of poor people more than equivalent spending on aid programs or goods.
GiveDirectly is known for its use of modern technology and rigorous scientific methods to document its impact. Notably, GiveDirectly was early to accept donations in cryptocurrency. The charity’s latest innovation is harnessing an algorithm, designed by UC Berkeley, that uses artificial intelligence to identify the poorest individuals in the poorest areas, and transfer cash relief directly to them.
In 2021, GiveDirectly announced they had sent $1000 to more than 178,000 US households in need during the Pandemic. It is estimated that 98-99 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to giving, with the company needing little for overhead.
