Role
Who you are
- The ideal candidate is proactive, has strong analytical capabilities, and can collaborate effectively across teams
- Bachelor’s degree with a focus in analytics, statistics, economics, finance, marketing, or other quantitative fields
- 3+ years experience in management consulting, strategic data science/analytics roles in a technology company, or an equivalent analytical role in a high growth startup
- Experience analyzing data, extracting key insights and trends, and producing actionable recommendations from the data
- Ability to think strategically and tackle open-ended problems, leading to analysis, recommendations, and next steps
- Experience building relationships and influence with cross-functional teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present findings and recommendations to different types of stakeholders, including senior leadership
- Proficient in SQL and Excel/Google Sheets with strong quantitative analysis and data visualization skills
- You are a self-starter, take ownership, and are proactive; you have an eagerness to identify opportunities and a drive for impact
What the job involves
- The Marketplace organization drives Lyft’s business growth and ensures our marketplace performs reliably and efficiently. Within Marketplace, the Market Insights team is responsible for the health and growth of Lyft’s top regions
- We are looking for an analyst to join the Market Insights team to identify key opportunities in these regions and influence strategy across the company
- From long-term strategic decisions to weekly agile operations, you will own a range of business-critical work
- You will identify our marketplace’s most critical gaps, create business and product strategies to address them, and partner with cross-functional teams to deliver impact
- Become an expert in rideshare marketplace behaviors/trends and support leadership in data-informed business strategies and decisions
- Leverage data and analytics to identify problems and opportunities in Lyft’s top regions, synthesize the trends and insights, and recommend action plans
- Operate within rideshare decision-making frameworks with a critical lens, evaluating areas of improvement and business growth opportunities
- Partner with Data Science, Product, Engineering, and other teams to deliver business, product, and strategy improvements
- Be proactive in pursuing opportunities and have a true ownership mindset to get things done
Our take
Lyft has aimed for consistent growth, making sure to pitch itself as a more reliable and friendly ride-sharing option than its main competitor, Uber. Uber has a greater market share and operates globally, but Lyft hopes to compete by its focus on ride-sharing over Uber's more diversified business approach and as a more rider-friendly and greener alternative to Uber.
Operating only in the USA and Canada, Lyft is in a position of being less affected by global events than Uber but also more vulnerable to local conditions. As an example, while it doesn't face the regulatory hurdles around employment rights that Uber does, it is unable to balance out the cost of the unusually expensive US auto insurance across its operations.
In 2022, Lyft acquired PBSC Urban Solutions, a bike-share equipment and technology supplier, allowing Lyft to compete in new verticals and reaffirming its commitment to green transportation. It has also trialed and launched Lyft Assisted, where drivers help passengers from their door into the car to get to medical appointments. These developments chime well with Lyft's unique selling point as a friendlier and more environmentally aware ride-sharing app.
