Role
Who you are
- You’ve worked as a software engineer for 3+ years
- You’ve got a good grasp of computer science fundamentals - either from a computer science degree, or experience
- You’ve worked with both frontend and backend. It’s OK to be stronger in one than the other, but you’re eager to build your knowledge about both
- You have a track record of building and shipping software, probably in a small team in a startup environment. Working in an environment with constant change sounds exciting rather than scary
Desirable
- You’d be joining a small team where flexibility is important - you think it sounds exciting to one day be adjusting positioning in CSS, and the next be debugging database queries
- You’ve got a product engineering mindset - you care about your users, and you’re passionate about understanding their needs. You build solutions that solve their problems, rather than chase the latest trend
- You’re curious and eager to learn and develop, and would like to work with like-minded people. You understand that nobody has all the answers and that’s OK - we work together to solve problems
What the job involves
- You'll slot into one of the 2 engineering sub-teams at Spill, each of which focuses on one or two new features at a time. You’ll mainly contribute to this work, as well as dealing with bugs and maintaining the existing functionality at Spill
- You will be able to voice your ideas and have a large impact on shaping the product, as you work with the rest of the team - both engineers and non-engineers - to decide the right way to implement a feature and then actually build it
- Types of work you'll do: build new full-stack user-facing features (eg support new ways to book or pay for therapy), work with design to improve usability and consistency across our product (eg develop our design system further, standardise our components) and help improve our observability, error reporting, and logging for our services (eg continuously add metrics, logs, and other metadata as you work)
- Every project Spill works on is different - in some of them, you might need to really flex your backend muscles, while in other ones you would need to mostly work with frontend. In some of them you’d be delivering complete features mostly by yourself, but in most, you’d be contributing pieces to a larger project
- You’d be working in a cross-functional team directly with product stakeholders. You take direction, and you work to establish a high-trust relationship with your coworkers

Our take
Some emotional pain — like heartbreak or taking a risk and failing — can help us to learn and grow, but much of it is unnecessary: prolonged low mood, imposter syndrome and crippling social anxiety for instance are entirely negative. Spill believes that the solution to unnecessary emotional pain is already here — it just hasn't been evenly distributed yet.
Counselling and therapy have existed for over a century, and have been shown time and time again to dramatically increase emotional stability in as little as one or two sessions, and reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety as successfully as antidepressants. Spill's solution is to provide text-based chat therapy as an employee benefit, allowing their customers' staff to access BACP-registered (and equivalently qualified) counsellors on demand.
Spill aspires to become 'everything that the NHS, private health insurance and employee assistance programmes are not' - easy to access, well designed, and 100% unintimidating. It is currently working with over 600 businesses, including Rightmove and Monzo, and is delivering more than 30,000 counselling sessions per year.
