Role
Who you are
- 6+ years of experience, with the 3+ most recent years specifically in Data Engineering or distributed Software Engineering
- Must have a Computer Science degree or equivalent experience demonstrating CS fundamentals
- Mastery of SQL for data extraction, transformation, and analysis
- 3+ years of experience working in the cloud (AWS preferred)
- 3+ years of experience building ETL/ELT pipelines with tools like Apache Spark, Apache Beam, AWS Glue, etc
- 2+ years managing pipeline workflows with tools such as Airflow, Argo, Prefect, etc
- 2+ years of experience working with Apache Iceberg, AWS Lake Formation, Apache Hudi or equivalent
- 2+ years of experience leveraging analytical solutions such as Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, or Trino for large-scale data processing and analytics
- 2+ years of experience leading other Data Engineers on complex big data initiatives as the tech lead
- Preferred experience working in an environment that required strict data privacy standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA) and security best practices
- Preferred experience with Kubernetes
- Preferred experience with Tableau, Looker, or other data visualization and reporting solutions
- A willingness to “roll up your sleeves” and do whatever is necessary to ensure company success
- Experience working in a rapidly evolving startup environment

What the job involves
- We’re looking for a Staff Data Engineer to lead the engineers on the Health Intelligence team in building robust, scalable data pipelines, tooling, and infrastructure
- This role reports to the Manager, Data Engineering
- Build and maintain high quality data systems that calculate Garner’s provider rankings
- Implement algorithms to improve the accuracy of our provider rankings data while lowering total associated costs and resource utilization
- Partner with engineers across Garner to define and implement coding standards, common libraries, and shared tooling
- Partner with Data Science, Researchers, and Product to convert ideas from research into reliable, performant production systems
- Drive the technical strategy in the team to ensure we are building maintainable, scalable, resilient software
- Help the team grow by mentoring junior members and raising the engineering bar
Our take
An overworked US healthcare system has resulted in long waits and expensive prices. Due to rising costs, the health insurance industry often leads to patients not accessing the care that they need. Garner Health creates digital services that allow patients to find a medical expert that fits their specific needs, whatever their insurance circumstances are.
The startup provides an app that analyses local health-insurance claims history through AI. This data is used to recommend local medical professionals that will work with a patient's circumstances whilst providing direct communication channels for liaising. This helps patients to identify the highest-quality doctors and helps doctors improve how they practice medicine.
Despite other companies providing similar bespoke healthcare services, Garner Health shows a cutting edge by partnering with patient employers. This provides the financial incentive that employers must cover all or a portion of medical expenses, making healthcare financially accessible for all involved. The company has good funding at its back, and in 2022 partnered with Marathon Health towards reducing the inefficiencies of specialty referrals.
