Role

Who you are

  • 3+ years experience managing a production SWE team
  • Proven record of excellent technical collaboration and decision making in a cross-functional environment
  • Experience with one or more of ML for sensor data generation, AV simulation, graphics, video game development, distributed systems

Desirable

  • Experience working with Google infrastructure
  • Experience with Gaussian Splatting, Gen AI, Diffusion
  • Experience developing high availability distributed systems
  • Experience working with Unreal Engine 5

What the job involves

  • The Sensor Sim Platform team develops and deploys sensor simulation technologies to solve some of Waymo's hardest problems in safety validation, onboard development and ML model training
  • We work closely with research and partner teams on bleeding edge sensor simulation solutions, including Gaussian Splatting, GenAI Diffusion, Unreal Engine 5 and traditional ray tracing
  • In addition to specific rendering solutions, the team is responsible for the distributed system and API hosting sensor simulation solutions
  • This role would report to the Manager of Machine Learning
  • You will lead a team of about 10 SWEs and 1 Tech Artist to develop production sensor simulation solutions
  • The role is highly cross-functional, requiring tight collaboration with multiple research and onboard teams in a bleeding edge area
  • You will be responsible for developing a technical roadmap that leverages and combines different sensor simulation approaches to accelerate Waymo's ability to scale safely
  • You will be responsible for optimizing scale, reliability, eng excellence and the ability to plug in new approaches in a highly available distributed simulation platform

Our take

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company that began as the Google self-driving car project in 2009. After initial development, it secured permits to deploy autonomous ride-hailing services in cities including Phoenix and San Francisco, but has recently hit a major bump in the road with safety concerns that resulted in a recall of over 400 self-driving cars.

With the autonomous driving industry already besieged by setbacks and public distrust, this development does Waymo no favours. That said, as an industry leader there remains the possibility it will see out the storm, but massive attention will need to be given to rebuilding trust with consumers if this is to be the case.
