Role
Who you are
- J.D. and currently licensed in a U.S. state with 7+ years of legal experience, preferably with in-house experience with a consumer financial services business, a fintech, bank or crypto/blockchain company
- Experience counseling product teams in launching financial services or technology products, and have a clear understanding of the legal underpinnings supporting these products
- A strong interest in digital currency, blockchain technology, and innovative constructs pioneered by decentralized applications, web3, and DeFi
- Familiarity with consumer financial services regulation and agencies (FinCEN MSB, State MTLs & SEC) and consumer services and internet regulations and agencies
- Experience with build-outs to support Anti Money Laundering (AML)/Know-your-customer (KYC) requirements, and regulated e-money and money transmission obligations
- Be a team player with proven problem-solving, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Practical risk assessment skills and the ability to work with teams to find mitigation options and provide results-oriented legal guidance
- A sense of humor is a must!
Desirable
- Deep knowledge of blockchain technology and Ethereum is preferred
- Preferably, experience at both a law firm and in an in-house setting
- Financial services compliance experience
What the job involves
- We are seeking an experienced, business-minded attorney to join our Legal Team as Assistant General Counsel, Product to provide legal and regulatory support for a suite of on-chain products and infrastructure
- You will support product managers, business development professionals and engineers by advising on issues relating to blockchain infrastructure, DEXs, digital payments and other on-chain products
- As a member of the Legal Team, you will work alongside a team of talented professionals in a fast-paced industry with a supportive and friendly company culture, advising on some of the most exciting and innovative legal issues in blockchain technology and digital assets
- Integrate into the day-to-day operations of our Product Team, providing legal, business and strategic advice. See around corners and creatively solve problems for the business as they plan, build, and execute on their product roadmap
- Ensure product compliance with applicable U.S. and international laws and regulations, in close collaboration with Legal Team colleagues
- Provide risk-based, business-oriented full product life-cycle counseling, from ideation and development to launch and operation
- Provide practical, actionable legal input on the design of new digital product functionalities, DeFi tools, and infrastructure. Work cross-functionally with stakeholders, including Partnerships, Marketing/Communications, Finance, Security and Operations
- Advise on compliance obligations, including money transmission, KYC, consumer protection, and privacy laws, as they relate to self-hosted applications
- Work with outside counsel where necessary for subject matter expertise or international support
- Monitor relevant regulatory developments
Our take
The Ethereum blockchain has seen a surge in activity over the past year or so - but, much to users' frustration, its transaction volume has failed to scale accordingly, leading to hefty gas fees and slow transaction times. Offchain Labs is one of a few players developing Layer 2 rollup solutions, and its Arbitrum rollup has gathered substantial momentum and support in a relatively short time.
Offchain Labs’ Arbitrum claims to offer all the benefits of a rollup - less costly, more efficient - without compromising on security. It is, at the time of writing, the only scaling solution for Ethereum that has working fraud proofs, and at the end of 2021 was dominating the layer 2 rollup market share.
This kind of high-profile and superior efficacy determines a successful blockchain technology. With Offchain Labs’ leadership pedigree and its string of acquisitions, it’s no surprise the company is leading rollup innovation efforts. This sector, however, moves at lightning speed—and the competing ZK rollups are by no means out of the picture just yet.
