Role
Who you are
- We are looking for an engineering leader who'll be comfortable doing anything from working with the platform team to set up new python services, to working with data engineering to enable a new data streams, to working with legal to work through privacy issues
- Have experience managing a cross functional engineering team with embedded ML engineers that developed impactful solutions of machine learning & NLP problems at scale to production applications, i.e, search (keyword and semantic), embeddings, reranking, recommendation, personalization
- Successful track record managing a high performing product engineering team of 5-8 engineers and consistently delivering value to users (2+ years of management experience)
- Previous experience delivering large-scale, reliable systems that require a lot of cross functional collaboration
- A technical background that gives you the ability to relate to the team's problems, facilitate discussion, and guide/coach engineers when making tradeoffs and technical decisions. (7+ years of software engineering experience)
What the job involves
- As an Engineering Manager leading Search and Discovery, you will help accelerate our ability to return billions of hours to scientists by empowering them with the most relevant content in the most highly trafficked part of our application: the core illustrator
- We want to help scientists find the science they're looking for in their own language, and build a 'visual auto complete' that can personalize and anticipate what scientific content would be most relevant to a scientist using our product
- You will lead the strategic direction for how we can make BioRender as revolutionary as the breakthroughs communicated using our product
- People: Lead, nurture and grow a high-performing team to deliver an incredible amount of user value
- Product: Collaborate with product and design to deeply understand the user, the product problem space, and how engineering can accelerate product advancements
- Execution / Delivery: Lead your team to deliver search and personalization systems to empower users to instantly find the content they are looking for
- Technical depth: Facilitate great technical decision-making across a broad technical stack, having passion for the technical aspects of your work, but a desire to let engineers drive the details
Our take
One of the best ways for science students and experts to communicate ideas is through diagrams, but not everyone has the illustration skills to pull this off. Whilst computer graphics can be used instead of manually drawing scientific imagery, the lack of a dedicated resource for such images prevents diagrams from being consistent and professional.
Biorender hosts thousands of pre-made icons and templates to be used in the creation of diagrams across over 30 different life science fields. The resources follow consistent quality standards and can be dragged and dropped within the platform to create scientific diagrams, to be used by students, teachers, labs, and educational institutions.
Other visual libraries that include scientific icons and templates exist for the creation of diagrams, but Biorender has presented a novel idea with its exhaustive library, offering to produce missing icons on demand within 48 hours. The entire library is free to use alongside basic design features by individuals for educational purposes, with more advanced features and paid licenses being available for labs and institutions. Its success at visualising complex diagrams and information has helped Biorender achieve several rounds of substantial funding.
