- Measurable experience in a leadership role where you have led teams, products, and directly managed other data-focused employees
- Past experience educating, evangelizing, and guiding on data-related initiatives
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Expertise in enabling consumer-centric metrics to determine success and inform growth opportunities (e.g. customer LTV, marketing funnel effectiveness, return on media spend, A/B testing, audience segmentation, etc.)
- Experience evaluating and leveraging third party tools as well as customer data to develop audience profiles, cohorts, and integrate with marketing and sales tech
- Preferred experience in media and/or with SaaS products
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to analyze and disseminate significant amounts of information, with attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to analyze large datasets to identify patterns/trends and apply statistical techniques
- Experience with using business intelligence tools (Looker preferred, but not required)
- Ability to present findings to all levels of the organization
- Preferred experience with AI initiatives, testing, and rollout
- Applied experience and proficiency with SQL
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A strong track record of collaborating effectively with colleagues
What the job involves
- The Director of Product will champion a data-informed culture
- This person will partner across the technical data leads as well as across the organization to determine how to drive and implement strategies as the result of customer behavior, traits, preferences, and motivations
- Use your agile skills to oversee the development and delivery of roadmaps and assure that your teams are working on what is most critical
- Partner with product leadership across the department to devise strategic means of growing critical audience data, deriving meaningful insights, and promoting self-service
- Collaborate with technical leadership within the data organization, to have a unified vision of the platform and necessary outcomes that the team can deliver against
- Propose impactful initiatives to deliver on the needs of the organization based on your expertise
Our take
Axios is a digital news site covering business, tech, politics, and media trends, with a focus on smart and efficient coverage. Much like rival comparable sites The Economist and Politico, it’s also diversified its media to include podcasts, newsletters, and a mobile app. Whilst it remains a major national and international news outlet, it’s also pursuing a new avenue to help shore up its position: local news.
Local news outlets have been in sharp decline over recent years: it’s too costly, with too little revenue. Axios’ plan is to opt instead for local newsletters. They’re highly advertiser-friendly, and the model itself is exceptionally scalable. So Axios may succeed where traditional efforts by other outlets like The Huffington Post (and countless local outfits) have failed.
Axios was previously held up as an exception to the mergers and acquisitions other news outlets were having to undergo to weather the decline of print media. However, in order to fund the expansion into local news, Axios has been acquired by the global conglomerate (and previous investor in the company) Cox Enterprises. This is good news - Cox Enterprises owns and protects local newspapers in Ohio, and looks set to be a hands-off and values-aligned new Axios owner.
