Role
Who you are
- You have 3+ years in a designer role, whether agency and/or client-side, with experience designing for a wide range of brand and marketing channels
- You have a robust portfolio demonstrating deep understanding of typography, color, imagery and graphic elements; including motion graphics
- You are a self-starter and self-checker, taking ownership of your work and constantly seeking better
- You are collaborative — open to input and balanced discussions
- You pay close attention to detail — no detail is too small. You're also not afraid to propose new solutions or bold thinking — no idea is too big!
- You’re an expert in the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign)
- You are comfortable in Sketch and/or Figma with knowledge of web design standard methodologies
- You have designed for online retail environments and e-commerce
- You have video, animation, and/or art direction experience (not required but a plus)
- You love dogs

- For a self-starting, strong-willed, creative, and strategically focused designer with a clear, clean, and compelling design sensibility. This is an opportunity to use your design powers to help dogs live healthier, happier and longer lives
- One Team: We don’t think of ourselves as “Acquisition Marketers”, “Engineers”, “Data Analysts”, or “Product Managers”. Beyond denoting skill sets and areas of expertise, we don’t think departments matter. We’d rather align ourselves to the goals we’re working to achieve and make sure we have necessary subject matter expertise to drive meaningful impact. We strive to orient ourselves around customer problems TOGETHER – getting the right people, with the right context, in the right rooms/Zooms to solve problems holistically
- We are skeptical about everything and precious about nothing: Ideas can and should come from anywhere, and we aren’t tied to our own. We proactively source input. We talk to our customers and leads regularly and are quick to change course if we know there’s a better or more impactful way to solve problems
- We consider the customer journey in all of our decisions: We know that no interaction exists in a silo and therefore understand how important every single one is. We ensure our strategy sets prospective and new customers up for success and drives long-term retention. We answer questions and address problems early and proactively. We understand the value of different channels, initiatives, and messages and know how to articulate impact and advocate for prioritization holistically
- We Execute For Impact: We don’t subscribe to “best practices” or “industry KPIs”. We’re uninterested in how we compare to “benchmarks”; instead we orient ourselves around being the best we can possibly be. Similarly, we don’t subscribe to rigid or classical expectations of roles – i.e. acquisition is hyper-focused on improving customer retention and experience
- We Are Focused and Work Without Assumption: We are not beholden to ideas. We have goals and believe everything beyond that is a series of hypotheses to validate. To that end, we seek to work in sequence and not in parallel. We constantly ask ourselves, “what’s the most important hypothesis I should be working on right now? How do I confirm or reject that hypothesis as fast as possible?”. We rarely have timelines/deadlines and are constantly taking in new information and adjusting our priorities accordingly. We don’t expect to be perfect the first time
- Create engaging branded marketing and advertising creative, including digital, emails, social, landing pages, print materials, and beyond
- Deploy our design system across online retail channels, finding ways to tell The Farmer’s Dog story visually to new audiences
- Continue to develop The Farmer’s Dog brand standards and guidelines, helping to refine our visual style, templates, typography, illustration, and beyond
- Work closely with art directors, copywriters, and our production team to develop new photography, illustration, and written ad copy to continue differentiating our brand and ensuring a bold identity
- Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to respond creatively to briefs, brainstorm new assets, and workshop areas of opportunity
Our take
Pet food production in the US is held to alarmingly low safety and quality standards despite being a $99 billion industry, which is hidden behind loose labeling and marketing regulations. When one of the founders of The Farmer's Dog realised that dog food was making his dog sick, they decided that dogs shouldn't be fed anything that wouldn't pass legal requirements for humans.
The Farmer’s Dog produces customised dog food packages that are sent as a regular subscription service. Recipes behind the dog food are personalised and are comprised of natural and high-quality ingredients, aiming to meet the dietary requirements of each dog. As the dog food is human-grade, the company even taste-tests its recipes on humans.
The startup sends millions of meals every month and boasts a continual subscription rate of almost 50%. It has raised $60 million in funding to date and is developing new pet food products and scaling to offer its subscription service outside of the US.
