Role
Who you are
- 10+ years of software engineering experience, including 7+ years with Public Cloud (AWS, GCP, etc.) and
- 5+ years designing/scaling distributed systems
- 5+ years of deep experience in Python and at least one other backend language (TypeScript, Java, Go, etc.)
- 2+ years building AI-powered products at scale with foundation models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, etc.)
- 2+ years of experience with LLM integration patterns such as RAG, agentic loops, and orchestration frameworks like LangChain or LlamaIndex
- 3+ years working with MLOps, data pipelines, evaluation, and observability systems for continuous model improvement
Desirable

- Experience architecting secure, compliant AI solutions in regulated environments (HIPAA, GDPR)
- Familiarity with human-in-the-loop systems and clinical decision support frameworks
- Experience designing evaluation pipelines for human alignment, factual accuracy, or model interpretability
- Contributions to open-source AI frameworks or applied research in GenAI safety
- Experience leading or mentoring engineering teams in AI or ML platform domains
What the job involves
- As a Principal AI Engineer at Rula, you will own the AI foundation that determines how generative AI shows up across mental healthcare
- You will operate where architecture, applied research, and real-world clinical constraints meet, designing durable, production-grade systems that power patient engagement and provider workflows at scale
- This is a deeply hands-on role where you will act as a technical multiplier, architecting core platform primitives (RAG, agentic loops) while setting the standard for technical excellence and safety in a regulated environment

More than half of adults in the US will be diagnosed with a mental illness during their lifetime, and yet inaccessibility of treatment remains a huge problem. That’s what Rula aims to solve, with its platform that matches users to therapists that are covered by their insurance.
The company, formerly known as Path, is partnered with a number of major health insurers, including United Healthcare and Anthem, making it an accessible service for millions of Americans. It allows users to browse therapists almost instantly, with just a short questionnaire to fill in before their matches are shown.
Though the market for tech-enabled mental health provision is rather overstuffed, with giants like BetterHelp as well as newer competitors, Rula's partnerships with insurers set it apart. The business has been steadily growing, and significantly bolstered its executive team in 2023. It also rebranded to emphasise its vision to improve not only access to mental health care, but also clinical outcomes.
