Who you are
- 2+ years of strategic finance, corporate finance, or investment banking experience at a high-growth technology startup or well-established company
- Experience working on projects that require cross-functional collaboration
- Advanced Excel & financial modeling skills. Able to build robust financial models used by teams throughout the company, and to size opportunities and build business cases for pursuing new initiatives
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to influence cross-functional partners at all levels within an organization
- Basic SQL proficiency (or willingness to learn). Able to manipulate large data sets, uncover hidden insights in our data, and meaningfully improve our understanding of our business through this process
What the job involves
- The Finance & Strategy team is responsible for accelerating the growth of our business by identifying and implementing new opportunities and solutions
- We are looking for an Associate who will work with partners across DoorDash to ensure we are making efficient, data-driven decisions
- You will partner with teams across the business to support financial decisions that involve one of our various products by evaluating effectiveness and developing creative ways to grow the product
- Drive strategic decision making in a fast paced constantly changing environment
- Collaborate with key stakeholders to develop new processes and investment decision making frameworks
- Work to optimize our approach to balancing growth vs. profitability
- Find ways to automate operational aspects of the financial planning & analysis process
- Develop reports to track budget vs. actuals and provide visibility to business partners around areas that are over or under-performing
- Identify and quantify key risks & opportunities in our business
- Support special projects to continuously improve, automate, and scale forecasting and reporting tools, processes, and methodologies
- Track and analyze key business/financial KPIs, uncover trends and assess current/future business risks and opportunities
Our take
DoorDash was an early entrant into the last-mile restaurant delivery business, which is now crowded with the likes of Uber Eats, Postmates and GrubHub. They offer restaurants an end-to-end delivery platform, generating new business and access to a network of delivery drivers.
To differentiate itself in the market, DoorDash focused on areas with fewer competitors and found success in this untapped market. Other factors, such as the company's targeting of restaurants which many not typically offer a delivery service, also contribute to its profitability. The company made its stock market debut in 2020 with one of the biggest IPOs of the year.
However, in light of increasing discontent around DoorDash's commission structure from restaurants, competition remains fierce. The business recently responded by publishing a transparent fee structure, but the number of options open to restaurants means DoorDash must fight to keep its customers loyal. Despite this, by focusing on consumer retention, logistics and technology, the company is likely able to maintain its existing growth and revenue.
