Role
Who you are
- Proficiency in SQL and Python for data extraction and analysis
- Familiarity with BI tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, or Looker
- Experience working collaboratively using git
- Ability to communicate complex technical topics clearly and effectively to a diverse audience
- Detail-oriented with a strong analytical mindset and a habit of testing and validating insights
- Comfortable with using a command line and writing basic code
Desirable
- Experience using dbt to build data models
- Familiarity with Databricks
- Knowledge of Streamlit for building interactive data applications
What the job involves
- The Kraken Utilities team is in a very exciting growth phase, and has already signed 4 clients; Severn Trent, Leep, Portsmouth Water, and Cuckoo
- We are currently 90+ people (engineers, product, implementation, strategy) along with 1500+ people in the overall Kraken world
- What we do: build the most AI-driven, innovative, forward-thinking platform for energy management
- From optimizing resources to delivering cost-effective, exceptional customer experiences through advanced Customer Information Systems (CIS), billing, meter data management, CRM, and AI-driven communications, Kraken is powering the next wave of innovation in the energy & utility industries
- All our technology is written and maintained by a multi-discipline engineering team of around 1500 people globally
- Our engineers work in ‘super teams’ which are focused on key areas of our platform as well as other innovative products
- This also includes server-side, client-side and mobile engineers working closely with UX experts, copywriters and designers
- Teams are empowered to choose a way of working that works for them, often opting for a Kanban-like approach
- Notion and Asana are then used to specify and manage work; Github, CircleCI and Terraform Enterprise as part of an immutable-infrastructure, continuous delivery pipeline; and Datadog, Sentry and Cloudwatch to measure performance and monitor production
- We’re now charging Kraken to power utilities beyond energy (think water, broadband,..) and started a new business Kraken Utilities 2 years ago
- We are looking to expand our Data team by adding a talented Data Analyst / Analytics Engineer to help us scale, implement a good culture, and work on some really exciting tech challenges
- Some of our coding conventions are open-source
- Kraken is a great place to learn, work with some talented people and level-up your skills
- Develop and maintain analytics models using dbt to turn raw Kraken data into actionable insights, particularly within the Telco market
- Design and build dashboards that track and communicate the health and success of the Kraken product to stakeholders
- Empower our clients to interpret Kraken’s data
- Provide ad hoc analytics and data science support to our AI/ML team
- Navigate and thrive in an evolving environment where projects, responsibilities, and priorities may shift as we continue to scale

According to Octopus, the energy industry in the UK is ruled by a handful of complacent companies peddling fossil fuels, pricing trickery, and poor customer service. Aiming to disrupt the status quo with sustainable energy, Octopus entered the market in 2016 and now supplies energy to millions of homes in a number of countries. Octopus has made a name for itself in energy circles largely because of its “Kraken” technology platform, which it claims is able to reroute energy from renewable sources around a network far more efficiently than competitors.
Octopus further differentiates itself through its aspiration to make everything as easy as possible for consumers, from the simplicity of their bills and the fact that customers are not locked into a contract, so they can leave at any time, to offering customer service over email and social media at times that suit customers. It aims to make the eco‐friendly choice the easy choice, so all of its tariffs use 100% green electricity, while being cheaper than competitors' non-green tariffs.
Its continually creating innovative new products too. For example, Octopus Tracker, where prices change daily to guarantee you get the market rate; Agile, where the price changes every half hour to enable you to benefit from cheap electricity when the sun shines, the wind blows, and the networks are under-utilised. One of the current challenges the company faces is that its products are more complex than its competitors, given that it uses 1000x more data than traditional energy companies. Because of this, it's exploring ways to explain to customers exactly how their products work.
