Role
Who you are
- Solid hands-on experience with PHP and at least one of its modern frameworks (such as Symfony, Slim, Laravel), plus MySQL
- Solid experience using AI coding tools such as Claude Code (or similar), and exposure to agentic engineering workflows
- Experience across the web development lifecycle, including coding, testing, deployment, and maintenance; exposure to requirements analysis and system design is a plus
- Experience building and integrating APIs (GraphQL and/or RESTful) and working with relational database design
- Familiarity with SOLID principles, clean code, and common design patterns, and interest in applying them in day-to-day work
- Proficient in using Git for version control, including branching, merging, and code review processes
- Good problem-solving and analytical skills, and the ambition to take on increasingly complex technical challenges
- Good verbal and written communication skills in English, able to explain technical concepts clearly to different stakeholders
- Curiosity, being interested in optimizing processes, learning domain’s ins and outs
- Taking initiatives, having analytical mindset, being proactive and solution-oriented
- A sense of ownership and the drive to see topics through
- Collaborative deep work. You thrive in a balance of focused coding time and collaborative design sessions. You're equally comfortable whiteboarding with designers, pair programming with engineers, or diving deep into a complex problem solo
- Teaching and enabling others. You light up when explaining complex concepts in simple terms, and you enjoy mentoring teammates and sharing knowledge that levels up the whole team
- The details AND the big picture. You can obsess over the fine details of a user-facing flow one moment and architect a complete feature the next. You find satisfaction in both micro and macro optimizations

What the job involves
- We are AMBOSS, and we’re looking for a Backend Engineer in the Educator Experience team
- Engineers at AMBOSS are at the forefront of shaping user experience for doctors and students, helping them make critical decisions, ultimately impacting the healthcare of billions of people worldwide
- We are looking for someone with a passion for technology who wants to keep growing their engineering craft while helping the team raise its bar.
- We work AI-first: agentic tools like Claude Code are part of our daily engineering workflow, and we are looking for someone excited to help shape how software gets built in this new era.
- Join our agile team on a mission to enable institutions (like educational clinics, medical schools) to use AMBOSS resources efficiently and effectively when teaching their learners (e.g. residents and students)
- Actively contributing to engineering projects within our new B2B product “Educator Tool”, from conception to completion
- Apply best practices in code health, testing, and maintainability, and help us improve them
- Use AI and agentic tools (like Claude Code) across the development lifecycle, from exploration and implementation to testing and code review
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to refine project requirements and specifications
- Address Ad-Hoc requests from customer support channels
- Share your knowledge within the AMBOSS community, contributing to a culture of continuous learning and growth
Our take
Becoming a doctor is challenging, and this already demanding journey is further complicated by the intricate web of the medical education system. The current system often imposes restrictions on collaboration, fails to provide integrated resources, and lacks supportive examination boards.
AMBOSS was founded by doctors initially to help medical students overcome this, but has now extended to become a knowledge platform for all types of medical professionals. Today the company‘s products are used by more than two million healthcare professionals and students in over 170 countries.
The regularly upgraded knowledge base that the company has developed is an incredible growing asset. AMBOSS, however, will not rest on this and will continue to develop its smart learning technology to engage doctors even more deeply with their work so that healthcare works the best that it can for everyone.
