Role
Who you are
- Solid foundation: Advanced degree in a relevant field or extensive work experience
- Proven experience: 8+ years of software development experience, with at least 2 years as Staff Engineer or an equivalent role
- Excellence in execution: Proven track record of driving technical excellence and innovation
- Software architect: Solid background in data-intensive & event-driven systems and software architecture, design patterns and clean coding. Expert in Python programming and at least one more compiled language (e.g., Go, Java, Rust)
- Data Hero: Extensive experience with data storage, management and processing data at scale
- Cloud native: Deep understanding of cloud technologies (e.g., GCP, AWS), containerization and orchestration (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes). Experience with workflow orchestration tools (e.g. Prefect, Airflow) and distributed computing frameworks (e.g. Ray, Spark)
- DevOps advocate: Familiarity with DevOps and DevSecOps practices and tooling (e.g., ArgoCD, Kyverno), complex CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Gitlab, GitHub), infrastructure as code (e.g., Terraform, Cloud Formation, Crossplane) and observability (e.g., Grafana, Open Telemetry)
- Well-rounded communicator: Excellent communication skills, able to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Self-driven learner: Stays current with technology trends, evaluates new solutions (including AI) and grows with our challenges
Desirable
- Gained experience in designing and implementing large-scale, distributed and event-driven systems
- Contribute to open-source projects and technical publications
- Worked in a regulated environment, e.g. financial services, aerospace or healthcare
- Have knowledge of digital pathology or medical imaging
- Have experience with biomedical data processing and analysis
What the job involves
- As a Staff Backend & Platform Engineer at Aignostics, you will play a crucial role in shaping the technical direction and architecture of our data management platform and infrastructure
- You will work hand in hand with fellow engineering leads at Aignostics, as well as collaborators in academia and industry
- Your expertise will be instrumental in driving technical excellence across all backend & platform engineering teams, ensuring we deliver high-quality, scalable solutions that transform complex biomedical data into actionable insights for cancer research and diagnostics
- You will report directly to our Area Lead of Backend & Platform Engineering

- Steer: Define and drive the technical architecture and system design principles for our data management platform and infrastructure, working closely with engineering leads to establish standards and drive future development
- Consult: Guide the CTO office, product management and fellow engineering leads through complex decisions by providing expert consultation on feasibility, architecture, trade-offs and risk mitigation strategies, while ensuring alignment with our technical vision
- Coordinate: Foster technical alignment across teams by establishing shared architectural principles and best practices, facilitating cross-team design reviews to enable consistent decision-making across domains
- Lead: Champion technical excellence by leading strategic initiatives that modernize our architecture and reduce technical debt while measuring and improving our technical health metrics
- Educate: Elevate the technical capabilities of our engineering staff through structured mentoring, workshops and establishing comprehensive technical guidelines that enable teams to make better design decisions
- Advocate: Drive innovation by evaluating emerging technologies, leading proof-of-concept initiatives and building support for strategic technical investments that advance our engineering capabilities while ensuring measurable business value
Our take
There has been a worldwide increase in the numbers and complexity of cancer cases, alongside a predicted global shortage of pathologists. With this, classic manual analysis does not have the capability to support the precision medicine and drug development processes of the future.
Through its precision diagnostics platform, Aignostics turns complex biomedical data into transformative insights. It is able to power target identification (for drug development) and biomarker analyses, as well as support clinical trials with its toolkits.
The company plans to continue expanding its portfolio with new product offerings for biopharmaceutical clients. It is also leveraging its latest funding round to support growth in the US, as well as the development of leading foundation models for pathology in collaboration with Mayo Clinic.
