Who you are
- This role is best-suited for someone who is equally data-driven and creative, combining technical SEO, behavioral and cultural insights, and content roadmaps to make our web ecosystem a high-performing growth engine
- 8+ years of experience in SEO, content strategy, web growth, and/or content-driven growth
- Proven experience owning and executing SEO and content strategies for a high-performing brand website
- Experience optimizing blog ecosystems, educational content, and conversion-oriented pages
- Ability to analyze data and user behavior insights to inform strategy
- Comfortable working in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment, proactively identifying opportunities and solutions
- Proficiency in SEO tools (Google Search Console, SEMrush, Ahrefs, Screaming Frog, etc.)
Desirable
- Strong grasp of AI-driven changes in search, including LLMs, AI-generated content indexing, and alternative discovery methods
- Background in A/B testing, content optimization, and user journey mapping
- Experience with YouTube, TikTok, and other organic content discovery channels

What the job involves
- As part of Upstart’s Brand & Creative Team, we shape and elevate the brand across all digital surfaces, ensuring our website and content are discoverable, engaging, and strategically optimized for growth
- This role will be a key part of our "Web Tiger Team", working alongside our Lead Web & Experience Designer to drive organic discoverability, SEO, brand content strategy, and conversion optimization
- As a Lead Web & Content Strategist, you will own Upstart’s SEO and content strategy, ensuring our website and blog are structured for discoverability, user engagement, and conversion. You’ll
- You’ll define how we attract and retain organic traffic, partner closely with design, marketing, and freelance writers, and ensure our content is positioned for long-term growth in an AI-driven search landscape
- Own & Execute Web Content Strategy – Lead site content structure, product pages, blog planning, and SEO strategy to drive organic discoverability and engagement
- Partner with Lead Web Designer – Work closely with our Lead Web & Experience Designer to ensure SEO-informed page architecture, content structure, and conversion-driven optimizations
- Lead Blog & Editorial Strategy – Own content roadmapping, working with freelance writers and internal stakeholders to create high-impact, educational, and mid-funnel content
- Analyze & Improve Organic Performance – Use SEO tools (Google Search Console, SEMrush, Ahrefs, etc.), user behavior insights, and A/B testing to optimize for traffic, engagement, and conversion
- Future-Proof Against AI Search Changes – Stay ahead of AI-driven changes to organic search, consider alternative search ecosystems and channels, advising Upstart on new content opportunities
- Identify Growth Opportunities – Work autonomously to uncover gaps in our organic strategy and propose new ways to drive growth across channels
- Collaborate and Advocate Cross-Functionally – Partner with Marketing, Product, Design, and Growth teams to ensure content aligns with broader company goals, roadmaps are right-sized to capacities, and pro-actively advocate for the tools, plans or resources you need to drive success
Our take
Business startups across the world usually seek out funding, but this is often difficult for companies led by millenials. Millennial entrepreneurs with an excellent track record in business are increasingly requiring access to these loans, but their lack of credit history results in proposals frequently being declined.
Upstart provides loans that are aimed towards the target audience of millennials with entrepreneurial intentions, offering low interest rates that average at 12%. The company claims these rates are 10% lower than traditional lenders, and the service aims towards ensuring that the client is subject to no further fees (such as prepayment penalties).
Upstart claims that its unique selling point lies in the fact that its loans are funded the day after approval. Whilst the service focuses on personal loans for business, the company has also expanded to offer loans for car refinancing. Over 2022 and 23, Upstart's stocks fell dramatically and an investigation was undertaken by a law firm representing the company's long-term investors over alleged security law violations by its board of directors. However, the end of 2023 saw a 20% stock value rise for Upstart after its partnership with Mutual Security Credit Union led to a rise in customers, indicating that it is on the up after a difficult two years.
