Company mission

To help data scientists use data to teach ML/AI models how to make the best predictions.

Role

Who you are

  • Extensive experience developing full stack applications, with proficiency in both backend (Python, Java, Go, Kotlin, Scala, Rust) and frontend (React, Angular, Vue.js) technologies
  • Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript (ES6+), with a focus on cross-browser compatibility, accessibility principles, and delivering high-quality, maintainable code
  • Proven experience building and integrating scalable backend services and APIs, with expertise in frameworks like FastAPI, Django, or similar
  • Familiarity with database systems (Postgres, BigQuery) and experience working with streaming event and messaging architectures (Kafka, Spark)
  • Comfort working across the entire stack, including state management libraries (Redux, Vuex), frontend build tools (Webpack, Vite), and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP)
  • High user empathy, a keen eye for design, and a drive to build intuitive interfaces that solve real user problems
  • A passion for impactful communication and collaboration, leveraging tools like TDDs, code reviews, and constructive feedback to drive team success
  • A proactive approach to problem-solving with the ability to work independently and manage complex projects from inception to completion
  • BSCS, related degree, or equivalent practical experience

What the job involves

  • As a Full Stack Engineer, you will work closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to develop robust, intuitive, and performant web applications. You will have the opportunity to influence the entire technology stack, from database architecture to user interfaces, playing a crucial role in delivering value to our rapidly growing user base
  • Develop and maintain both backend services and frontend components of our data labeling platform, ensuring high performance, scalability, and excellent user experience
  • Design and build RESTful APIs and other backend services to support new and existing features, ensuring seamless integration with the frontend
  • Create and maintain responsive and accessible user interfaces using modern JavaScript frameworks, focusing on delivering intuitive and user-friendly experiences
  • Collaborate closely with product, design, and other engineering teams to translate requirements and mockups into complete solutions that align with our business goals
  • Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and contribute throughout the entire development process, from ideation to production deployment
  • Identify and implement areas of improvement across both frontend and backend codebases, driving changes that enhance the overall quality and maintainability of our platform
  • Establish and uphold best practices, coding standards, and development guidelines for both frontend and backend systems
  • Mentor all engineers across the stack, providing guidance on best practices, code quality, scalable and performant system design and professional growth
  • Within 1 week, you'll:
  • Setup your development environment, and enhance the self-serve documentation and workflows to ensure it’s pristine and effective
  • Meet your buddy, team, key stakeholders and the founders
  • Participate in team meetings and get close to the sprint in progress
  • Within 1 month, you'll:
  • Make multiple production contributions, across small features, enhancements and bug fixes as you ramp up on codebase, systems, workflows, and product
  • Give feedback in retrospectives, bringing in your experiences and a desire to build a world class engineering team
  • Review multiple pull requests, and leverage your convictions as a software engineer to see design patterns, code style and syntax upheld
  • Resolve multiple engineering dependent customer support requests—quickly get to the root cause and resolve complex technical issues
  • Within 3 months, you'll:
  • Independently drive and fully own development and delivery of complex features, and present on them in company meetings
  • Review PRDs and lead creation or review of TDDs,
  • Experience and give feedback across a quarterly OKRs cycle, and help the team understand and plan its next quarter commitments
  • Continue to engineering team to improve our velocity and predictability
  • Contribute to our industry leading Open Source products and community (with over 20K+ users)
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers
  • Within 6 months, you'll:
  • Take the lead and own major features collaborating with other engineers for successful delivery
  • Leverage your experience to work closely with Product Management, Engineering and Customer Support staff to identify, document and help resole technical issues and product feature/functionality gaps
  • Support and help grow the open source community through your participation in meet-ups, design/code camps and technical speaking engagements
  • You will play a key role in shipping highly scalable products and the next evolution in labeling software
  • In 1 year, you'll:
  • Continue delivering increasingly complex projects
  • Play an active role in advancing your career to the next level

Our take

A number of new industries are developing, and winning big, in the slipstream of the AI boom. One of them is data labelling: the process of identifying raw data and tagging it with labels that will provide informative context for the machine model to learn from. It is proving a lucrative business, and HumanSignal is one of a growing number of startups looking to capitalize on this.

HumanSignal’s principal product is Label Studio, a collaborative data labelling solution with a focus on streamlining team management, relevant access and data security. With industry leaders such as IBM, Nvidia and Facebook having already adopted this product, it has certainly made a splash thus far.

HumanSignal has substantial funding under its belt but will have to compete with a large number of new data-labelling startups - some of them enjoying similar early success. With many heralding data labelling as the new “gold rush”, and the industry spreading worldwide, the competition looks fierce - but the space will be rewarding for those that win out.
