Our take
Ecosia is an Internet search engine that plants trees with its ad revenue. Whilst tree planting is a popular way to combat CO2 emissions, it has its sceptics. However, unlike some arguably tokenistic ‘tree-planting’ brands, Ecosia has set up a VC fund - World Fund - to help decarbonise the planet and it claims to be the largest dedicated climate tech VC out there.
Indeed, the company’s efforts have intensified with time, having spent around €7M on solar power since 2017, enabling its users’ searches to be powered by 200% renewable energy in order to be carbon negative. Ecosia also calls on similar businesses to follow it in investing in the green energy transition to secure a climate safe future.
