Role
Who you are
- We are looking for a well-trained, commercially-savvy lawyer to join Overjet’s legal department as the second legal hire
- While we don’t expect you to have subject matter expertise on all areas we focus on, you will need to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, and have a demonstrated ability to think through complex, novel issues
- 3+ years as an attorney. Strong preference for BigLaw background; in-house experience a definite plus, particularly if with a high-growth startup
- JD from a top law school and current bar admission (preferably in NY, CA and/or MA)
- Strong corporate and contract law background with exceptional drafting skills
- In-depth knowledge of at least some of the following areas: corporate governance, employment law, commercial transactions, healthcare regulatory law, artificial intelligence, and/or compliance
- Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills with an ability to succinctly distill, articulate, and advise on complex issues and recommended courses of action
- A startup mindset: action bias, no job too big or too small, scrappy, a willingness to fail forward, and a sense of humor
What the job involves
- You will partner with the VP of Legal in overseeing all legal affairs at the company and helping build a legal function from the ground up
- You will have the opportunity to work on a myriad of challenging legal issues
- The work is not always easy, but it is highly rewarding
- You will be a key player in overseeing all aspects of legal affairs at our rapidly growing, VC-backed healthcare AI company
- Commercial; Contractual: Lead deals with enterprise customers, strategic partners and vendors. You will manage multiple deal processes at a given time, work closely with our sales team, conduct negotiations, review and draft agreements, and advise internal leadership on deal terms and associated risks. (Experience negotiating enterprise SaaS agreements preferred.)
- Regulatory: Become familiar with, and advise on, regulatory matters affecting the business, including HIPAA, state-level laws, and emerging AI law
- While prior regulatory experience is not a prerequisite (although it’s certainly welcome), you should be able to demonstrate how you’ve quickly mastered new areas of law in the past
- Cross-Functional Partner: Become a go-to partner with teams across the organization - including People, Product, Sales, Customer Success - to advise them on myriad issues, thoughtfully balancing legal and commercial considerations
- Build and Scale a Legal Department: Help build a legal function that can successfully scale with the organization
- This includes identifying gaps and proposing solutions, designing and implementing processes to operationalize how legal work is done at Overjet, and ensuring the ongoing compliance of the business
Our take
Overjet is a medical AI company that uses machine learning to analyze dental radiographs and uncover potential causes for concern in patients' oral health. Using data that quantify bone loss, tooth decay, and gum disease symptoms, the visually driven results help dentists and patients visualize their oral health status.
Whilst helping patients with their oral health is a lucrative business, dental insurance is in a whole different realm. In 2021, the dental insurance industry crossed the $80 billion threshold, and dental AI companies like Overjet have a large stake in this surge. Their AI tool, built and developed by Harvard dentistry graduates in 2018, is utilized by leading dental insurance companies in the US to help better value the type of insurance that their customers are eligible for.
This goes some way to explain how Overjet received Series A and B funding within just 4 months of each other in 2021. The dental industry may have been slow to embrace AI technology for practical healthcare purposes before Overjet and similar companies like Adra emerged, but the same products were quickly capitalized on by health insurance providers in the US. This double incentive for investors is a promising step forward for Overjet, which continues to forge partnerships with city and state-leading dental organizations and achieved impressive Series C funding in 2024.
