Who you are

  • 7+ years of professional full-stack software development experience
  • 1+ year of experience applying Large Language Models (or significant side projects using LLMs and GenAI technology)
  • Strong computer science fundamentals - a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field, or similar experience
  • A track record of leading technical projects across the stack with a focus on long-term scalability and maintainability
  • Experience leading vendor integrations, especially co-development and R&D with vendor teams
  • Experience collaborating with design and data science teams to create seamless and innovative product features
  • Demonstrated ability to decompose large, ambiguous projects into consumable tasks for junior developers
  • A natural inclination for ownership and bias for action
  • Experience influencing cross-functional decision-making across product and design teams
  • Experience mentoring engineers across levels
  • Ability to explain complex technical concepts simply
  • Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial environment, and find comfort in ambiguity

What the job involves

  • At Cedar, our Staff Workflows team oversees the development of Cedar’s staff-facing software and its underlying technical platform
  • This includes several internal tools used by Cedar staff, as well as the Operator Portal, the primary interface used by health-system employees (call center operators, front desk staff, and patient advocates) to assist patients with payments, check-in, etc
  • We are currently seeking a talented Staff Software Engineer to help us extend these tools with innovative user experiences, leveraging the latest technologies like LLMs, that will help healthcare workers and Cedar staff alike accomplish their tasks more efficiently and effectively
  • Mentor engineers through technical guidance, hands-on coding, and thoughtful PR reviews
  • Collaborate with product, design, other engineers, and client success teams to identify product gaps, shape technical strategy, and launch new features
  • Partner closely with the data science team to design AI-powered features that enhance service solutions (like chatbots and workflow automation) and improve patient experiences (such as AI-generated bill explanations)
  • Lead organizational improvements in processes, infrastructure, architecture, and developer satisfaction, identifying ways to elevate the engineering team
  • Cedar values flexibility; this role, like many others at Cedar, is remote friendly
  • Build, test, and maintain high-quality code, with an emphasis on readability, flexibility, testability, and long-term maintainability

Over $1 billion is said to be lost annually by physicians as a result of inefficient and disjointed healthcare billing practices. The subsequently low patient satisfaction rates lead to poorer care, and real losses for providers who see patients switching away from their plans. Cedar looks to remedy this long-time problem set with a selection of consumer-facing services which streamline billing, insurance, and healthcare processes.

Future healthcare billing concerns a huge percentage of US adults, and optimizing patient satisfaction is of increasing concern in a competitive sector for healthcare providers. Like other companies with a tech-forward focus, Cedar has been able to capitalize on an industry increasingly expanding towards digital healthcare solutions.

After acquiring competing patient finance streamlining service OODA Health in 2021, Cedar has gone on to capture even more success. The company has netted substantial funds on top of the launch of its Payer Intelligence Layer, which allows it to integrate data from insurers and providers to create a single source of information. It was also endorsed by the Montana Hospital Association's shared services division MHA Ventures (MHAV), to be listed as its only preferred patient financial engagement technology, all boding well for its performance into the future.

Arel began their career as a technology associate at Bridgewater Associates, working on trading systems for the world’s largest hedge fund. Graduated from Princeton University with a B.S.E. in electrical engineering and a certificate in finance.

Dr. Florian Otto

(Co-Founder & CEO)

Prior to founding Cedar, Florian was an executive at Zocdoc where they drove the commercial adoption of the platform. Florian also founded a daily deal company in Brazil (ClubeUrbano) that was eventually acquired by Groupon. After the acquisition, he became Chief Executive Officer of Groupon Brazil. Florian began their business career as a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Company within their healthcare practice. Florian holds a M.D., D.D.S. and PhD from the University of Freiburg, Germany.
