Company mission

To build technology infrastructure that public servants use to deliver better, faster public services from a wider and more diverse set of businesses.

Role

Who you are

  • 2+ years of industry experience in web development across the stack. You’ve built many new features and even led some small project teams
  • 1+ year of professional experience with React. You’re fluent with its patterns and best practices, and you’re ready to be the most frontend-focused engineer on a full-stack team
  • Some professional experience with Python. You can build full-stack features on your own, and are handy with one or more server-side frameworks (we use Django)
  • A track record of being decisively impactful. You make pragmatic technical choices to ship code quickly while maintaining a high quality bar
  • An ownership mindset. You value autonomy and seek out ownership. You want to solve hard problems and you consistently deliver impact, even when things get ambiguous
  • Strong teamwork skills. You’re a great communicator, and you do your best work as part of an empathetic, high-performing team. You’re always learning and growing fast

What the job involves

  • We’re recruiting a Software Engineer with strong frontend skills to join our tight-knit, dynamic engineering team. You’ll help grow Pavilion’s marketplace and improve how public servants find and partner with businesses across the country. In particular, you will:
  • Collaborate with an experienced team of engineers, PMs, and designers to dream up and build high-impact features. You’ll meet government buyers in person and use what you learn to inspire new workflows in contract management, purchasing, and search
  • Create delightful and performant UIs. You’ll work with terrific designers to level up our visual bar and bring public purchasing out of the ‘90s
  • Wrangle thorny technical problems. In the last year our team has tackled entity resolution, AI explainability, and the cutting edge of semantic search. You’ll use LLMs and vector DBs to help build the world’s best database about who sells what to local and state governments
  • Mentor team members, sharing your expertise to uplift our collective skills. You’ll drive improvements to our core frontend technology, patterns, and best practices
  • Shape our shared engineering and company culture. Pavilion is still an early startup, so you’ll make an outsized impact – not just on our product, but on how we work as a team

Our take

Public procurement accounts for around $2 trillion per year, but the process is held back by outdated technology – something that Pavilion (formerly CoProcure) co-founder Mariel Reed learned all too well while working for the City of San Francisco.

In a bid to connect government agencies with private vendors, Pavilion offers a central marketplace where government buyers can access cooperative contracts with other public agencies and expedite the contracting process.

The company is currently focusing on growing its user base, and encouragement can be taken from the fact that it received substantial financial backing from Forerunner Ventures and has been rapidly scaling up its team.

  • We’re super collaborative - Ask us about launching a first-of-its-kind government partnership in under a week, how everyone on the team participates in user research calls and customer support requests on rotation, or how we love solving crosswords as a team.
  • We're unabashedly earnest - Ask us about how we celebrate our wins in #shoutouts, what we do at Thursday Time, and how we like to combine our musical talents and passion for public procurement.
