Role
Who you are
- This role is ideal for someone who enjoys coding, working with LLMs from OpenAI and Anthropic, and learning how to turn ideas into real-world systems
- Currently pursuing or recently completed B.S. in Computer Science or related field (M.S. in Computer Science or related field preferred)
- Curiosity and an understanding of LLMs or AI system development — from prompting to evaluation
- Comfort working with SQL and relational data; familiarity with tools like Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift is a plus
- Understanding of data pipelines and ETL using dbt, FiveTran or custom Python code
- Interest in working across the full lifecycle — from problem framing and prototyping to testing and deployment
- Clear communication skills and an ability to collaborate with both engineers and non-technical teams
- A growth mindset — you like learning new frameworks, exploring ideas, and solving open-ended problems
What the job involves
- We’re looking for an AI and Data Engineer intern (three month contract) who’s eager to make a real impact in the world of AI and help multiple teams at Alation use AI to realize higher productivity and efficiency
- You’ll be part of a small team that will design and build AI agentic applications powered by Alation’s data, in short iterations and make them available to multiple departments within the company
- You’ll get hands-on experience with modern AI frameworks while developing your skills in data, software engineering, and customer collaboration
- One more thing… We work in a hybrid model—you’ll join us in our Redwood City office to collaborate, connect, and enjoy a team atmosphere!
- You'll build purposeful AI Agents: Work with modern LLM and agent frameworks (e.g., LangChain, Pydantic-AI) to evaluate, benchmark, and refine performance
- Build AI-powered applications: Develop agentic systems that combine structured data, language models, and workflow to solve real-world problems
- Understand and work with the internal data warehouse as well as other business applications such as Salesforce
- Code with care: Write clean, well-structured Python code for integrations, pipelines, and intelligent systems
Our take
While companies continue to gather huge volumes of data on customer behavior, efforts in leveraging said data are often hindered by data access and interpretation, which ultimately leads to incomplete datasets.
Alation is a machine learning powered data catalog. It pulls together all a company’s key data from popular sources like Oracle, Spark and Tableau, and presents it on its platform. This means that users can search for multiple strands of data on just one API. Its services include data governance, digital transformation, and data discovery.
With both the data catalog and data analytics market growing rapidly at a 25% annual growth rate, Alation finds itself in a very strong position having shown triple digit growth for four years running. The platform is used for diverse purposes by Pfizer, FinnAir, Pepsico, Salesforce, American Express and BMW.
It’s this range of applicability, from weather-induced flight delay prediction to rare disease identification, that has led to investments resulting in a valuation of $1.7B. Though it's not the only company of its ilk on the market, with the likes of Informatica, Aginity and Alteryx all competing, Alation’s rapid year-on-year growth, solid investment from the likes of Japanese data communications leader NTT DOCOMO and an elite customer base bodes well for the company's future.
